My DS received a call yesterday from USNA asking him if he would consider Foundation school for a year! He then saw his status of his application change.
Congratulations! You are being considered for sponsorship into the United States Naval Academy Foundation Program for the year of 2016. Foundation is a tremendous opportunity for those who are offered the chance to attend. Upon completion of the program requirements you will have secured a selection to matriculate with the Naval Academy Class of 2021. You will be contacted in the near future by a representative of the United States Naval Academy Foundation Program to discuss your options and the next required steps. Congratulations, again, on your selection for the Naval Academy Foundation Program. Good luck and Beat Army.
Who here has experienced this and what happens now? We are waiting on someone from the Foundation to call and explain, but I was curious to hear from someone who attended one of the foundation schools for a year. Is it paid for? This is great news!

Read the USNA Foundation Prep Program info at this link if you haven't already:
http://www.usna.com/page.aspx?pid=251

It's an excellent program, and the year away builds maturity and grooms academic skills.

Congrats! This is a great opportunity. It is pretty much as close of a guarantee as one can get for the next year. There are a list of approved schools: http://www.usna.com/page.aspx?pid=251. Essentially he can pick any of these approved schools. He will need to research these and figure out which one suits him best. Location, travel costs, costs of school (what foundation doesn't cover), military vs non military schools are all factors. Its a great program and really preps a student. Foundation will cover some costs and they will review what they do and do not cover. He needs to pick the school that best suits him. If possible, visit the schools. Foundation has a very good relationship with the selected schools and continues to use them because they do a very good job of prepping students. There are lots of discussions on this forum about Foundation and some of these specific schools. Would recommend to use the search function and take a look at some of them and review the Prep school forum for alot of the school specific questions/discussions.

Thank you! We have briefly looked over some of the schools, I am sure he will prefer a Military school. That year will fly by. Its this the same as NAPS? Will he have to "apply" to one of these schools or does the Foundation take care of that?

Same function - a prep year that generally guarantees a seat in the next class if completed satisfactorily and all else remains good. NAPS is a Navy school on a Navy base run by Navy staff, with NAPSters in uniform. Prior enlisted personnel generally go there, along with some others.

Organize your questions and wait for the Foundation call to get the latest and most accurate info.

My son attended school with a few foundation students. It is a great program but as said they don't pay for everything. Check total tuition minus Foundation Grant, it can be a significant number. Some of these schools can be 50K per year with board but it is a great opportunity for an appointment. Remember the next four are free for you not them! Check Boarding School Review.

Each school is unique and if mom and dad are picking up the remaining price tag, then obviously you will have some influence. Northwest Prep has a great reputation and is only 1 semester long and then the student returns home and takes a Plebe like schedule at their community college or local 4 year. Other schools fit the more traditional east coast boarding school description and then Marion Military, Hargrave and NMMI are all military based. Each school is unique in its own way. What they all share is they have a great relationship with the Foundation Program and preparing young men and women for USNA. He was selected early for this program and will have plenty of time to research and pick the right school. Foundation will walk through the application process for the prep school, what is covered in costs, and the options. Candidates who complete Foundation have an extremely high success rate at USNA (I am sure Foundation will give you the stats). NAPS is a Prep school, but not part of Foundation. Both great programs, but different. I would encourage any young man or woman who is offered Foundation or NAPS to take the opportunity.

A relative who is currently a plebe did Foundation last year. To answer a couple of your questions not yet answered . . . In terms of costs, the school itself typically reduces its tuition cost to Foundation students. Parents are expected to contribute based on their ability to pay. The USNA Foundation picks up some of the cost -- more if the parents are less able to pay. You can discuss this with the Foundation rep who will contact you.

Technically you "apply" to the Foundation school but, in reality, once you're selected by USNA it's largely a formality. The primary reason you wouldn't get your first choice of school is if there are already too many USNA prep students at that school (based on school capacity) so make your decision early. :) You do not need to reapply to USNA next year (from a Foundation school); you do need to apply for MOC noms and also pass the PFT (vs. the CFA).

Foundation students typically have the highest graduation rate of any accession source. It's a great opportunity for many reasons. PM me if you have any questions re the program.

That's so awesome! My DS BGO raved about NAPS and Foundation School! That is what we're hoping for DS. Needs a little maturity and better than the 3.9 GPA he has now and 1500 SAT, and more leadership. Please share your DS' s stats with us if you don't mind so we can see the candidates they are sending to Foundation, (his GPA, SAT/ACT, leadership, etc.....). Thank you and congratulaions!

It wasn't my child and I don't know the stats. The short version is this person did really, really well in h.s. but the h.s. wasn't all that great so the extra prep was helpful to deal with the challenging academics of USNA.

Thanks USNA1985 for the reply. Academyorbust2020m if your still on the forums, can you post your child's stats so we will know what the review board is accepting for Foundation? Thank you and congratulations!

I am currently a senior at the Kent School in Kent, CT. I am not a foundation kid but am applying to Air Force and West Point. We have several Navy Foundation kids as well as Air Force foundation kids. If you would like to ask any questions about Kent feel free to message me or reply to me.

As far as his stats, he has known since middle school that he wanted to be an officer in the military so he has always strived to take rigorous courses etc. His old school did not offer AP classes but the school he's attended for the past 3 years does offer them. He participates in 3 sports and has been captain in all three. Junior class President last year and student council, several other clubs. He took the ACT several times this past year. 28 Math, 25 English. He attended summer seminar. He also attended candidate weekend, wrestling camp 10th grade and SEAL wrestling camp. Last year he took 5 AP classes and this year 3 I believe including AP Physics. He's very athletic. Did well on CFA and no issues with Dodmerb.

Thank you for the info, good to know for 9th, 10th, and 11th graders. That's great that he was offered Foundation school! I guess that leaves my DS with a TWE this time around:-(, well he has 4 more chances and he says he is going to use every one until he gets in to USNA!

Good Luck and Go Navy!

His stats are pretty decent, I'm sure he'll do well. Congrats!

DS was a sponsored prep and is now a Plebe. Foundation helped us decide which school he attended. The school discounted tuition/board; our contribution was based on ability to pay (we had to provide a copy of our federal tax return to the Foundation to confirm household income). We were responsible for travel cost for school breaks and holidays, school supplies and text books, uniforms, sports and activity costs - these expenses can add up. The year away from home taught him independence and responsibility, albeit under supervision of faculty and staff. It also taught him how to travel alone (we live on the west coast, he attended an east coast school). The school staff knew what needs to be done for the Foundation preps, they even helped the preps complete some of the initial documents that needed to be submitted to USNA, staff even took the preps to a local optometrist to complete their eye exam to get the prescriptions for their BCGs! It was a great opportunity for DS, the experience matured him in many ways, which is as important as preparing him academically for USNA.

Preps are an awesome program, glad they have it! I am sure your DS is doing great as a plebe! Keep up the good work, Go Navy!
