Suggestions for Printer

We were planning on purchasing and mailing a small printer to our DS so that he will have it for when the Academic year begins. Does anyone have suggestions on a brand/model that is a popular choice? Or is this something that we should just give him money for and have him purchase from the cadet store/BX on campus?

I was guessing that it is probably best to have a brand/model that the store on campus supports with ink cartridges...or does everyone just order this kind of stuff online?
 
I got mine from the local walmart. It doesn't really matter.

Get one with a scanner though. More useful at CGA than you can imagine.

I second that suggestion. We ended up sending a multifunction color laser printer. DS is able to scan, copy and print. Perhaps a little overkill, but we're hoping that over four years, it pays off. DS just replaced his first toner cartridge (black) and he had it shipped in with Amazon. You might want to look into an Amazon Prime membership. The free 2 day shipping comes in handy and easily offsets the membership cost. BTW - we purchased the original printer with Amazon (best price and free shipping).
 
Mine bought hers at the CGA bookstore. I think it was less than $150.00.
 
Granted, I didn't have this option as a cadet, but a long cable or cableless printer would be helpful. The furniture in Chase Hall can be "interesting." so having some options of where your printer fits is helpful. I would get a solid printer, nothing with 100 little pieces. This printing will move every semester, so you don't want thinking that could easily snap off in one of those moves. Size may be an issue too. The desks aren't horrible in Chase Hall, but you'll eventually have more to play with, maybe a clock radio, maybe another monitor... who knows... but everything will take up space and you'll start running out of it (and bringing in another table isn't really an option).

When I was a cadet company day rooms also had printers, but personal stuff should have been done on your personal computer. My guys actually had to stock company day room printers with paper. Fun.
 
I'm going to sound dumb....but how much printing is actually done? We've gone paperless at work, even in high school teachers accept a Word Document via email for assignments. For the light duty printing I do, I bought a wireless scanner,copier, printers...$50. No Fax machine, but who sends a fax anymore? Even the bank lets you take a phone photo of a check for a deposit instead of filing out a slip. We almost live in a paperless world.

Maybe a current cadet can chime in for my own edification.

For whatever it's worth, DD is at USAFA and I assume it's fairly similar to USCGA. We got her a very nice HP all in one last year that stores both regular and photo paper inside covered trays. Looks nice and neat during SAMIs (room inspections).

I'm told she and her squadmates use it regularly for scanning of homework, printing out reports, making cheap keepsakes/gifts on cadet pay (photos with envelopes). Also remember, new cadets must leave their rooms in full uniform, be able to properly remember and greet all cadre along the way, and be subject to all sorts of random "training" should they venture out into the hallways to use the squad printers. By the way... I'm told some new cadets wind up doing all sorts of off things without leaving their room for the same reasons. :)
 
My two cents (which is worth exactly that) - when I asked my son if he would like a printer, he said no, stating that they didn't have much room on their desks. He did get a monitor and we got him a docking station for his laptop. Don't forget that they move rooms during the year and must pack up their stuff when they aren't there in the summer. The more they accumulate, the more they have to deal with.

Does this mean that Cadet room assignments change after Christmas break? I believe students have the same room for the whole year (2 semesters) at traditional college.
 
We charged every semester. That could have changed. The move wasn't very "fun".
