Waiver Process

I have received a DQ on a shoulder surgery I had 4 years ago which is fine now. I play college softball and am very active. But when I had surgery I had an adverse reaction to a medication. It says I am DQ'd for that as well. On the USAFA portal it says that I am medically disqualified. When will the waiver process get started? I think I am a competitive candidate, I have received one nomination and I still have my fit assessment due to logistics issue but that will be done next week.

What is the likelihood of a waiver or how do I get the process going. If I get DQ'd for an academy can I still get a waiver to serve when I join after my civilian college?
 
You don't get the process going. USAFA will initiate the process if, and only if, they want to pursue a waiver. Your competitiveness will have a lot to do with that. That being said I would think the medication allergy might be the bigger deal depending on what the med was. It might make it too difficult, if not impossible, to treat you in the field if you are injured, but that's just surmise on my part as your shoulder sounds like it's probably fine and wouldn't be too big a deal for a waiver.
 
I should add that the waiver is decided upon by the commissioning source. There have been folks that didn't receive a waiver from an academy bit did from the corresponding ROTC program, and vice versa. Therefore it MAY be possible to commission after college but I would still expect you need to go through the waiver process.

Thank you for the help and clairification! My the problem is with the medication MOBIC a common anti-inflammatory but Ibuprofen and others work fine with no reaction. I had never heard of someone being DQ'd because of a reaction to a med.
 
Happens all the time.... that's why (in part) they ask if you have any allergies... or at least they did when my son applied.
 
This is interesting, my DD is allergic to morphine (went into anaphylaxis after tonsils were removed as a child). To my thinking, morphine would be used in the field, but my DD wasn't dq'd for it.

I'm not sure if this is the issue you had with you shoulder, but I received a waiver for history of shoulder instability from USMA and USNA. I never had surgery on my shoulder. USNA requested additional information on my shoulder before they made a decision on whether to give me a waiver or not, but USMA gave me a waiver without any additional information needed, I didn't have to do anything to get the waiver from UMSA, they just gave it to me. I got the waiver from USMA about a month after being DQ'd, and the waiver from USNA about 2 months after being DQ'd. I read about several other people that were DQ'd for shoulder instability, and from what I have read most of the people that got DQ'd for shoulder instability that had fully recovered received the waiver.

thank you! I just tore the labrum and had some instability from a sports injury when I was a kid. Like I said It's all healed up now. This is very encouraging news!
 
I have a shoulder question, more of how to report it the what they will do with it because no one knows that! DD had shoulder pain several years ago from unknown cause, MRI with contrast done and it was negative. Doc said probable shoulder impingement (not instability), 2 months PT and no problems since. Should she take her records with her to her physical?
 
Did she answer yes to any questions about her shoulder? It sounds as if she was never diagnosed with anything. You can always bring them, but if DoDMERB wants additional materials they will request them.

The only time she has been asked was during her PMS interview at this point. They asked if she had any past injuries, she said no. The reason why she said that is because she is black and white and she never actually "injured" her shoulder, it just started hurting. The official "diagnoses" for the sake of getting PT through insurance was shoulder impingement, physical therapist said no tears, negative MRI, but just needed to strengthen/balance muscles in her rotator cuff. We are just trying to be prepared for the next step.

IMHO there is nothing to report. She had a sore shoulder.

I did just look at the medical form and there is a catch all question
#78. Had any injury or illness other than those already noted?
That one could get anyone in trouble. Especially when they say "any".

Your DD should be fine.

I wanted to follow up. When she answered the questions there were two that she answered yes to on this issue, it seems pretty black and white.

One was "have you ever had an X-ray, or other ...." So that was a yes since she had an MRI and then the other one was "Have you ever had or do you now have any bone or joint problem, injuries, surgery or medical treatment'... So that was a yes since she had physical therapy which would be treatment for her shoulder which is a joint. She has sent in a letter for the physical therapist describing treatment and result and also the MRI report. Now we are just waiting.
