U.S. troops killed near Bagram, Taliban insurgency intensifies

Condolences to the families, especially this time of year.

And yet for most of the day yesterday the headlines were about the Miss Universe pageant. Sad........

Thanks for the update bruno. I heard the news first thing yesterday morning but as of yesterday evening I still hadn't heard the branch of service identified. May they rest in peace.

All 6 were Air Force. 4 were OSI and two were Security Forces.

Our thoughts are with their families.

but unfortunately, typical.

Security conditions have been deteriorating in Afghanistan for some time now, but one had to go to the backpages to know it.

It seems part of a cycle of disinterest by the public, followed by "unexpected tragedy", followed by overheated rhetoric and a call to action by people who don't know hummus from Hamas, followed by a half-hearted response, followed by a period of quiet, followed by disinterest by the public, followed by...

There is one cycle in Syria/Iraq and a wholly separate one in Afghanistan.

We have a President who can't wait to leave office. A Democratic front runner vowing to stay the "whateverthecourse" we're on and a collection of Republicans whose creative alternatives run the gamut from banning Muslims from the US to carpet bombing.

The victims and their families deserve much better. Rest in Peace.

Such a tragic loss. Maj. Vorderbruggen was a inspiration to many people.

Maj. Vorderbruggen was one of the first openly gay service members to marry after the military lifted its "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," policy.

The group "Military Partners and Families Coalition," posted a tribute to Maj. Vorderbruggen on Facebook saying, "Major Vorderbruggen was a person who lived for her family and for her country. She was one of the most friendly and laid-back people you could ever hope to meet and was an accomplished airman, a great athlete, and most of all, a wonderful mom. She leaves an indelible legacy of strength and selflessness to all those touched by her life."

Maj. Vorderbruggen leaves behind her wife Heather, and son Jacob.

Many of those lost had young children. I think the oldest age I heard on the radio was 5 and one of them had another on the way. So sad.
