After going through many threads on here, I have found something really interesting,The SEAL program at the Merchant Marine Academy. Is this still an active program or has it been disbanded? Who knows anything about it? It seems really interesting. Thank you!

Not sure, but please remember, the USMMA is an academy for the Merchant Marine, first, and not an adjunct Naval Academy.

I've always been of the mindset that if you want to be a SEAL, go be a SEAL and don't let college get in the way. You can enlist directly into NSW these days so you go pretty much straight from Boot Camp to BUDs.

If you care more about being an Officer from an Academy and maybe, maybe, maybe get in to BUDs four years from now, well ...

I agree with KPEngineer. If you go in as an officer you will not be kicking in doors and breaking things. If that's what interests you then you should enlist.

If you want to be a SEAL go for it. Nothing wrong with that at all. Here is the mission statement of the Academy "To educate and graduate licensed merchant mariners and leaders of exemplary character who will serve America's marine transportation and defense needs in peace and war." Note the part of leadership and defense in peace and war. Don't let those who can't read critically dissuade you from your dreams. If Congress didn't want to commission men and women out of the USMMA they wouldn't allow it. Go for it. By the way I was in the special operations community for many years and commissioned SEALS do kick down doors.

Still very active and couple close friends went USMMA to SEAL. I'm not positive but I believe there are 1-2 spots per year that guys can apply for. No one applied my year though
