Has anyone recieved a NAPS LOA this year?

Was just curious if anyone didn't get a LOA for USNA but was given a LOA for NAPS? Thanks!

There is no such thing as an LOA for NAPS. You are either offered it after your application is reviewed or not.

Agree with Spud, never seen a LOA for NAPS. Remember no Nom is needed for NAPS, so USNA can just appoint someone to NAPS. There has been a waitlist for NAPS in years past, but that is it.

This is crazy! The wait isn't much fun! NavyHoops, is there any rhyme or reason on who gets NAPS? Been told by admissions that they can call candidates right up to I Day if they are wait listed and someone doesn't show or injured! Tell me it ain't so!!!

Yes, it is so. Not the norm, but the rounding out of the class is a dynamic environment almost until the last minute. There are onesie-twosie events that occur late. Minds change, appointees get injured, and so on. Think of those outlier dots on a regression analysis.

There are plenty of threads relating to the rationale for NAPS and Naval Academy Foundation scholarships to private preps. It's always a lively discussion topic with whys and wherefores. Not going down that rabbit hole here, and with a very broad brush, these are tools for USNA to give candidates they particularly desire a chance to burnish skills. NAPS takes prior enlisted, many recruited athletes and many others with varying stats.

There are many stories of last-minute calls. My husband turned down his appointment to USMA and was an alternate for USNA, with Plan B being Penn NROTC. A few days before I-Day, he received the call and accepted on the spot. My mother-in
-law still talks about the stress. That was quite a few years ago, but it still happens. It's a white-knuckle ride to the end.

Geeeez! Thanks for the reply, may need a refill on my Valium several times over! I just signed on the dotted line and commissioned as a Flight Nurse 40 years ago! My how things change. I hate rollercoasters:-(

Oh dear..if they do get accepted this is only one of MANY roller coasters...you may have to learn to accept them to keep your sanity

Had a friend have her DD get a call the week of I Day telling her to report! They pulled it together in 3 days!!

99% of applicants will know April 15th their status. Those who are still in limbo come April 15th are usually on the wait list and know they are sort of in limbo/wait and see mode. Admissions will keep them updated on their status if they fall in this category. It is very rare to have some of these scenarios happen, but every year there seems to be maybe 1 or 2 that get that few weeks to few days phone call. If NROTC is your plan B you should be in shape anyways, but it does lead to some juggling. The great part is you can nearly show up naked on I Day and be just fine. Its not like you need to run out and spend tons of money.

And agree that this is the first of many roller coasters. There is the Plebe Summer, Plebe Year, will they get the summer training they want, will they get the billet they want, will they get their service assignment, will they get the top pick for ship rides... these are just some of the ones that happen during their time at the Academy. Then there is the will they make it through flight school (insert any school in here really), get the aircraft they want, will they get the better duty station, i haven't heard from them for 2 months and they are on deployement and I just wached the news... I hope they are okay, will they be there for the birth of their first child rides... this list is endless. My parents said me being in Iraq or Afghanistan was a 1000 times worse than anything they worried about during the application and at USNA. These boards are great in the fact they provide a ton of info and for parents its a connection to other parents worrying the same things. But, take some deep breathes and really don't freak out when you see LOAs handed out, stats on this board and appointments. Each kid has their own application, strengths and weaknesses. Don't compare, because we are only seeing what folks post, not how USNA scores any of that. Hang in there and good luck!

To answer the initial question, I can 100% confirm that you can receive an LOA to NAPS.
(I know because that is what I received back on October 28th)

Ok, so they are rare and appears you are currently enlisted? Had you completed your application at the time you go it?

For direct high school admits, don't count on a NAPS LOA.

Correct and it was technically 'complete' at the time but because of CIS errors (Saying I need a BGO Interview when enlisted military does not, that's what the CO's rec is for) it wasn't complete in the system. I also had a SECNAV nomination at the time if it changes anything.

Basically I received my LOA but had to wait about month to accept it until they sorted out all the issues.

Noms aren't needed for NAPS, but because everyone applies to USNA, not NAPS, you followed the absolutely correct path. Figured it was a completion issue on the application. Congrats on NAPS, it's a great path. A good buddy of mine was a prior Sgt, NAPS, USNA Brigade Commander and then highly decorated combat Marine as an officer. Great guy. The Marines on the yard have high expectations and expect a great deal from the prior enlisted Marines. They know who you are and will check up on you. They are also great mentors and can help if you have any issues.
