The Naval Academy reports record applications for the Class of 2013.
Over 15,000 applicants compared to approx. 11000 last year.
Makes for strong competition for appoinments.
Good luck to everyone

I've heard the same thing....

I spoke with the Admissions Office last week and was told the figure was 15,300+!!!

Looks like those who do receive an offer of appointment are truly the "Best of the Best!!"

Good luck to everyone......

Impressive stats! After much research, and a visit to the Naval Academy, it's no surprise to me that USNA rec'd a record # of applications.

My buddy, a grad from USAFA, told me that the USNA engineering education is considered superior to that of USAFA. (He couldn't quantify this, when I asked him to do so...it was just his gut impression, as an alum of USAFA.) I thought his opinion was worth pondering, esp. since he hailed from a competing academy. All US service academies are under the same stars and stripes. But, it amazed me to hear a USAFA grad speak so highly of the USNA curriculum.

Those who received an appointment to USNA can know that they have been considered to have a "special something" to offer in service of our nation. They have also been blessed with a great opportunity, as well. :thumb:

The year I apply is the year with the most applications ever. Isn't that just peach. :frown:

Record # of Applicants to USNA

anybody know how many of those 15300+ are 3qed with a nom?

I'm not sure how many applicants were triple qualified for the 2013 class. Maybe USNA could answer your question. However, the academy application process is unlikely to be entered into by prospective candidates who are deficient in the elements sought for by the academies. It's too much work. Interviews by committees and BGO's, academic verification, physical fitness testing, medical fitness exam.

The process is far more complicated than any civilian college application, to be sure. :wow:

Admissions Officer was here in town last week, and we had dinner with him. My wife, daughter and I.

During dinner he told us that they had record applications this year. He said it was almost 16,000. But he added, just because you have record admissions, doesn't mean you have record numbers of qualified applicants.

I asked if he thought the record numbers were due to the election coverage, of John McCain and his family ties to the Academy. His reply was that he thought that had an impact, but it was probably very small at best.

He mentioned that they have been really working hard on the marketing side of things, visiting schools, having presentations, etc.

Very true.

If I am not mistaken - I believe that this year USNA and NROTC combined their application. Could this also be that a number of NROTC applicants are being counted as USNA candidates even though they had no intention of applying to USNA?

Not too sure if that is totally accurate. I applied seperately and have gotten an nrotc scholarship and no word from USNA yet. The applications were NOT combined.

Perhaps "combined" was the wrong word. It is my understanding that everyone who applied for an NROTC scholarship was also considered a USNA applicant.

My understanding was that for the first time - USNA shared its list of applicant/candidates with NROTC - my son received a letter from nrotc in early june stating "congrats on candidate for usna, while pursuing that please consider and look into us- nrotc " something like that - I believe my son's BGO also referenced that for the first time navy was sharing candidate list with nrotc - just my understanding

As you can see from the data, candidates nominated tends to stay on the same interval, which is 3,750 to 3,850.

16,000 applicants is definitely a lot of applicants.
But I am pretty sure that the number of nominated candidates will be close to the mean for the previous classes, which is about 3,805.

3805 is the normal mean of applicant receiving a nomination so for the class of 2013, about 12195 out of 16000 (76.2 % rejection rate) will not be receiving a nomination.

My point: The nomination process is a lot harder than the previous years. As soon as an applicant gets a nomination, the chances of receiving an appointment to the academy will be close to the normal rate (as seen above).

Quite the statistics tauzeee. Thanks for those numbers. My mom and I were curious as to what percentage it would go down to once you have a nomination. Turns out I've had one since January and didn't know till last week.

Be a bit careful with the numbers and assumptions. Your are assuming that all applicants, finished their application, all applicants went on to complete their physicals, do their cfa's, all applicants went on to apply for a nomination - none of these assumptions are necessarily true. The only information that the Academy gives is the specific profile of
Applicants and Nominees
Applicants (includes nominees)............. 10,960
Number of applicants with an
official nomination............................. 3,838
Nominees qualified scholastically,
medically and in physical aptitude..... 2,196
Offers of admission................................ 1,537
Admitted............................................... 1,261

No percentages of acceptances, rejections etc are stated. You really can not give those percentages as you do not have all of the data. No where on the profile does it actually tell you how many applicants "went all the way" through the process.

I can tell you in our area I know of a few students that opened the application for NASS, went to NASS and then chose not to finish the application process. One chose not to complete the physical, chose not to complete the interview nor seek a nomination. Another chose not to seek nominations. Most Universities report the number of applicants as those who opened files, not those who saw the process to the end. You have no way of knowing if that is the case or not.

I also was told that NROTC apps were automatically being considered for USNA. That alone tells you of the 16000, not necessarily all are really considering USNA nor have all sought a nomination.

I forgot to mention that this data will not be 100% accurate.

This data is to add confidence into some of the candidates mind who are still waiting for their notification. I know that when I calculated this data and saw my chances increased from 11% to a higher number, I stopped worrying for a couple of days.

You are definitely right about NROTC scholarships being considered for Naval Academy.

No where on the profile does it actually tell you how many applicants "went all the way" through the process.

Exactly right.

Example:

For the Class of 2011: even though it shows there were 12,003 applications, the USNA considered only 8,822 to be "Candidates."
