Hi, I am a junior in high school and I will apply to the Naval Academy. I was just wondering if you all think I would be a competitive applicant because all the applicants I have seen had like 4.5 gpas, 2200 SAT, and a lot of leadership positions.
I had a gpa of 3.33 in freshman year (no honors), 3.83 in sophomore year (honors history and english, got an A in Chem), and currently have about a 4.0 (Honors Physics and honors all other classes besides AP world and AP lit). For my SATs, I got a 740 on my math, 610 CR, and 690 Writing. I gained a varsity letter my sophomore year for track and field and will most likely get another one this year. I am the treasurer for my Asian Student Association club, and am in Model UN and Robotics. I also volunteer for an organization, for two years, where I help teach the mentally disabled and I have also worked as a cashier and caddy.
Thank you for reading.

I think if you meet all the deadlines and pass your CFA you'll be good to go. There's alot of people who have lower GPA and SAT scores who have gotten In. But keep in mind the academy select people based on different reason. you might look good on paper and still not get selected. No one knows.

USNA publishes a class portrait of the most recent incoming class. You can see it here http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/classPortrait/ so you can determine how you think you stack up.
Your GPA is going in the right direction and your SAT scores are good especially early in your Junior year. Consider taking the ACTs and as you know work on getting your CR score up.

Become captain of your track team. Look for more leadership positions.

Consider attending and/or becoming an elected leader in Boys/Girls State.

Train for the CFA which will be administered during NASS.

Find your MOC (congressman and senators) web sites and investigate their nomination procedures. They all vary, but the deadlines for submitting for a nomination is usually Sept-Oct. Much earlier than college application deadlines.

Search some of the other threads by Juniors to get some other advice given out. Here are a few of them.

You need to seek out more leadership positions. I know you said you have lots of leadership but I only saw Treasurer and I expect you'll need more than that.

Has anyone received request for fall semester transcripts for class of 2020? DS has completed application and MOC nom on 23 December. Waiting on pins and needles!

I remember reading one post where 7th semester transcripts were requested. But I cannot remember which SA. The requests are made where an applicants academics are questionable.

That's what I suspected although he has A B Honor Roll since 9th grade and NHS plus 4.0 GPA and number 20 in class of 200. He is shooting for NAPS if he can make it. BGO recommended! Thanks for reply.

My BGO actually contacted me today and said I would be getting a letter soon requesting my 7th semester (fall semester) transcripts if that helps. Thank god for the heads up because I think I would pass out if I got a TWE only to find out it was just a transcript request

Also to add to my point above my BGO said the only reason mine were requested was because my transcript had some discrepancy (I believe my counselor screwed up and sent an outdated one) so I wouldn't be suprised if your DS doesn't get a request unless he also has some discrepancy

Thanks for the reply! I know what you mean, we live in a military town in San Antonio and have been getting a few TWE'S for the forums. I have to catch my breath each time my son opens one:)

DS received a "TWE" the other day only to find out tha it was a notification of a recruiting session. The real TWE don't go out until April.

I have a 3.91 GPA, 1860 on the SAT and 30 on the ACT. My stats are a lot lower than the numbers you quoted but I also am the team captain of a varsity crew team and cyber security team. I was appointed and I believe that my leadership positions and rest of my resume compensated for the board scores and imperfect GPA. You never know with the admissions board, they're impossible to predict. As for the CFA though (as someone mentioned earlier), be aware of the exercises on it so there are no surprises but don't stress it at all if you're an athlete. The minimums aren't public but I don't think I know anyone from NASS that didn't pass.

Short answer: you will definitely be competitive! Show them that you really want it and do everything as early as possible. Good luck!

Good Reply Annapolis2020! My DS has been repeating the CFA and is on the 4th attempt now, each time bettering his scores!. BGO recommended repeating to show determination. He is also an Eagle Scout and Drum Major of his high school band. Hopefully, this will help. Fall transcripts are on the way next Monday and then we wait and see. Good luck everyone!
