My Dd, who has always wanted to attend USNA, and had hoped to receive an appointment to NAPS if she didn't receive an appointment to USNA, has come to the conclusion that she is not going to get either of those things because of her low SAT scores. (550 Math, 570 CR)

She very much liked the information assurance program at Norwich University and has been accepted there. However, it is very expensive to attend, despite the $24,000 merit based scholarship they have awarded her.

So, with financial concerns paramount in her mind, she accepted the EPC scholarship offered to her by the Army. Her plan now is to attend Marion Military Institute and then transfer to Norwich to complete her degree.

I just filed the FAFSA a couple days ago, and now am wondering if she has made the right decision. She is excited about attending MMI, and it does look like a good program. She is also fairly confident that if she works hard, does well, and then is able to obtain the information assurance degree from Norwich, that she will be able to go active duty because of the priority the Army is putting on cyber security. But, with the FAFSA in mind, I wonder if perhaps Norwich will come through with more aid, making her first year there doable so that she can then apply for the AROTC scholarship for the other three years.

Second guessing is so frustrating. And at this point, having accepted the ECP scholarship, can she even change her mind and attend Norwich if we could find a way to pay for it?

For those of you with decent knowledge of MMI, Norwich, and/or ECP chime in with your thoughts?

To the Naval Academy? When she started the process, she assumed she would reapply. She has friends who got in on their second or even third try. But then, as she pursued a plan B, the Army's ECP scholarship was offered to her and she felt she couldn't turn down the opportunity to attend college with full tuition paid while obtaining the training to be the leader she wants to be.

So if she takes this route, she won't be reapplying.
 
I will say that tthe Information Security program at Norwich is one of the best in the country - my next door neighbor graduated with not one but three job offers in hand before Graduation day , and had her last 2 years of school paid for by the NSA - and has just finished her Master's from Norwich on the Government's dime, and the Norwich faculty in that department at least seem to be really plugged into the mover's and shakers in the field.
 
I can't speak to the requirements and potential wiggle room for the Army ECP program. I do want to strongly suggest/urge you and/or your DH to visit each campus with your DD to help you decide. I recognize that you and your family are of modest means, and I don't recommend it lightly. But even if it is a squeeze, the information and reconnaissance you gather will be well worth the investment in your DD's college success. It seems especially important to visit Norwich and meet with the instructors in the information assurance program or department. Your DD can talk to them about career options and possibilities through the Army, perhaps sit in on a class meeting, and find out what (if any) courses she can take at MMI that will be important to her third and fourth years in college, or what courses to really do well in. (I realize that MMI, because of its size and mission, has limited offerings.) And there is no other way to tell whether your DD is going to like a place without visiting each and getting a feel for each. This will help all of you decide how much time and energy to invest in working with the Norwich financial aid office (assuming release from the ECP is desired and/or possible), and much better ideas about how to make the transition from the first two years to the second two years as smooth as possible.
 
True. We have visited Norwich and she liked some things about it and disliked others. What she really loved though we're the professors she met with in information assurance. We will be visiting MMI in February.

If you were to be able to get more financial aid through Norwich after filing the FAFSA and your daughter were to attend and do well in her first semester here at Norwich the Army Department will hand her a 3.5 year scholarship. At the end of the first semester the Army Department here hands out maybe 10-15 scholarships to students averaging a 3.5+ which is not that difficult to obtain first semester. I have many friends here who were in the same shoes as your daughter.
 
My Daughter visited both Norwich and MMI. She really liked MMI better (we live in the Northeast, this was a surprise).
She was more impressed with the quality of the SAP candidates versus the cadets at Norwich .

That's so interesting. My DD also really liked MMI when she visited and she felt there was something more serious about the Cadets at MMI vs. Norwich. Anyway, she had a real sense that she belonged at MMI and that is where she will be attending this fall. She will be in their ECP program and is looking forward to training at Fort Knox this summer.

No idea which school she will choose for her follow on school once she gets her associates degree and commission.

My son is one of those cadets at MMI :). I'll be glad to answer any questions if you want to dm me

Hi:
So, all the chips are in, and decision made. Daughter was not accepted to West Point. She was accepted to Norwich. Was accepted to MMI. Got the ECP (Army ROTC) scholarship for MMI (or a 3 year ROTC Scholarship elsewhere). She will be able to dual-enroll in the ECP and SAP program at MMI, and will reapply to West Point in the fall/winter. She will go to Fort Knox this summer (end June?) for the cadet initial entry program.
 
Norwhich will often time throw in some room and board to sweeten the deal Check on that. Be sure to check out their Cyber Security center/degrees. They got Huge grants after 911
