I would like to send a care package to the plebe that hosted my son on an overnight. Having read a previous thread I know to send enough for the entire company, avoid candy, and understand that the contents may be confiscated for a variety of reasons. My questions are these. Are toll house cookies ok? Must I specify "Plebe" on the address? Thank you

That's a great idea, and I'm sure he will appreciate it. YES, definitely specify "plebe" on the address or he may have "to pay" for it. As for contents, I tried sending cookies to my son once and he told me not to. I sent a little package and he immediately shoved them all in his mouth so no one would see and he wouldn't get in trouble. That was 2.5 months ago, I am not sure if things have changed, if they have gotten some more privileges since then. Things I have sent to him: protein powder, power bars, peanut butter, crackers, nuts, beef jerky.
I have also heard that it depends on the company. Some people have sent cookies and brownies...

Oh, thanks for the info on the address! I would hate to have him "pay" for my ignorance! They were a big part of why his experience there was so incredible. I have included crackers w/peanut butter but I will pick up some of the other things you have suggested. Any other suggestions are more than welcome.

Since it's after acceptance day M/N is appropriate, just not 4/C.

We used the class year and Company back in the olden days ... M/N Shmuckatelli 2020-1 for example.

or he may have "to pay" for it

This is ridiculous, he won't have "to pay" for anyone not writing plebe on his mail.

Sending cookies for the whole company is also not the best idea, that was sorta an indoc thing. Now things are more independent.

This is definitely not accepted in today's regiment. Plebes are not considered midshipmen. 3rd Company's old CTO made plebes write "I am not a midshipman." hundreds of times. The reasoning is, on recognition day, you are recognized as Midshipman <Last Name> 4/C.

MMA19kid, you are not correct in your statement above. It may be "ridiculous" but plebes have had to "pay" for that exact reason - I personally know 2 that had to write hundreds of times "I am a plebe" or something similar because of the way correspondence was addressed to them. And one had to do extra stuff that wasn't clear to me. It's their way of putting them back in their places.

There is so much wrong information in this thread I don't know where to start.

^^You're getting second hand information. MMA19kid is probably more correct, after indoc when you have your own mailbox no one else is reading your mail. If someone "paid" for that during indoc it was because an upperclassman needed a reason to make someone pay, someone was going to get in trouble that particular night for something and that was just a convenient excuse.

Again now that you have a mailbox, and no one is reading the mail, you would have to get your mail, read it, take it to an upperclassman, ask to be punished for having the wrong tittle, and then go find another upperclassman to punish you, because the chances of the first one giving a fiddlers fart are slim to none.

If you want to be safe... just put the kids name on the letter/package with no tittle.

Send the M/N who hosted your kid some cookies, if they aren't stupid they'll find a hiding place in their room for them, and enjoy them immensely. Write their name and box number on the package, and don't sweat it. You don't have to send a ton.

It's amazing how sometimes what looks like a simple question can become so controversial. And even more amazing how some people want to discredit other people's comments based on their own experience without considering others may have had a different one. The truth is that, even if there isn't a reason for a plebe to get in trouble, he may still get in trouble for reasons beyond his control. So why give them a reason?
I'm sorry, I was just trying to help. It was not wrong information and not second hand. You are still entitled to your opinion. So am I.

It isn't second hand? Does that mean you're a graduate as well as a parent?

I know that MMA19, KPEng, and myself have opened our mail box on zero deck, sweated it out on the second deck of murphy during tattoo, and stuffed your personal drawers with cookies as you hear the CTO coming down the hall to inspect your room. That experience lends itself to a certain credibility that parents lack.

Plebes are going to do X number of push ups during plebe year. The excuse that gets given for them getting there varies, but it doesn't really matter, upperclass don't care about how a package of cookies is addressed.

I lived on flight deck of Palmer and we didn't have CTOs, the CX was in charge of the Plebes, but you are otherwise 100% correct.

I lucked out immensely my plebe year with a plebe only platoon experiment. They decided to try and isolate the plebe class more from the upperclassmen so they put us all together on flight deck. It was just Plebes, the CX and our PC. They must have seen it as some sort of failure because the next year they went back to integrating the classes throughout the platoons ... we loved it though.

I never had to hide cookies. . . . .I DID have lots of times where I had to hide whisky, though. . . .maybe not so much when I was a Plebe. . . .but I digress. . . .

Where did you live on Flight Deck? For the second half of 1st class year, I was in the stub wing that overlooked Wiley Hall. . . . .the first half I was on second deck, in the wing on the opposite end. . . Flight Deck rocked. . . just be careful where you drop the empties. . . .

This CTO is wrong.

The regiment doesn't get to "recognize" you as a Midshipman, the US Navy already did that on acceptance day. Recognition is about recognizing you as a Class.

Yeah, as I remember it, after Acceptance Day, we were no longer Plebe Candidates, (or midshipman candidates) but Plebes. . . .

First room on the main hall, next to the opposite wing. I had a view of the waterfront.
My last two years were on main deck, very end overlooking Wiley Hall. The Commandant and I would wave at each other over our respective morning coffees. As bad as that might seem, the only time of day it bugged me was when all the Wiley Hall people would come up the ladder right outside my room on their way to the SeaFag for lunch. I bumped into cheap shot way more times than was in my particular comfort zone. It did prove handy once though, I tried to mast with him for a Class2 in the ... ahhh, maybe I won't tell that story in an open forum, there is still an unresolved RO-8 somewhere with my name on it.

Hehehe. . . I kept my nose pretty clean while I was there. . . in spite of my behavior. . . Did have to deal with the NYC detectives, but yeah, that is something that won't be detailed. . . . now that we have misdirected this thread. . . Oh, worst room I ever had during my 4 years was 3rd class year, main deck, 3rd Company. . . in the Fishbowl. . . . like living on the Freeway. . . . and not much of a view, either. . .at least it was only for 6 months. . .

The funny thing was, I was a bit of a scofflaw 3/C and 2/C years and never got in trouble. 1/C year I decided to keep my nose clean (mostly) and make my last year(s) more enjoyable but it seemed like I couldn't stay off restriction.

I always went back to school a day early to claim a good room and scoop up extra furniture. Anything to make the next 6 months more bearable. Only one semester I didn't have a water view.

My worst room wasn't the room, it was the roommate. Not an otherwise bad guy, but one night I hear a voice from the darkness "So if I were to kill you, how would they go about kicking me out of school if I'm in jail?" That and another joke he told the CO of Naval Science during a formal inspection that is in no way repeatable in any forum. That "joke" alone would probably get him kicked out today.

I was lucky with my roommates. . . they were the ones with the bad one. . . . I was in Palmer Hall 4th and 1st class year, always had a water view there, was in 2nd company 2nd class year. . . see how that worked out? I was only restricted once, and that was early Plebe year. Could not figure out the regimental stuff. . . missed first Plebe Liberty. . . remember seeing my classmates trying to keep their 6 inches from the bulkhead while wasted (remember, drinking age was 18 back then). . . figured it out and only got 4 demerits the rest of my time there, for gear adrift 1st class year . . . room inspection by good ol' Fred Flintstone while at class. . . Used to go over the wall all of the time. . . among other things. . . just managed to figure it out. . . again, this thread is completely blown. . .

I was was an awesome roommate 1/C year, I basically commuted. My girlfriend worked at Melville Hall so she got two parking passes and gave me one. I used to park in front of Land Hall right next to my CO. Being on the six-year plan I barely had enough credits to be a full time student and managed to schedule almost everything between 1000 and 1300. Most days I would leave after lunch and drive back in before colors. I realized eventually that being seen between 0600 and 0700 in jeans would probably attract attention so I started wearing PT gear in the mornings. Literally the second day I started doing that I ran in to cheap shot on my way in the Palmer hall zero deck door by the Laundry. It was hard to keep a straight face when he asked if it was a good workout. I ignored the questions and just replied with "good morning sir".

Someone will come along eventually and bring this thread back on track ... or not
