Wait list: Is this good? Possible Appointment Available Later?

My daughter received her letter that she was wait listed..does anyone know how a wait list actually shakes out for a possible appointment slot? I don't know if this is a good thing and we still have a chance or shouldwe be discouraged...anyone have any good information to share

From some of the research I did it looked like in past years about 100-150 people from both Early Action and Regular Decision are put on waitlist and anywhere from 25-50 are eventually given appointments. I'm not sure how accurate this is, but it is all I could really find.
 
Wait list is DEFINITELY better than rejection!! That is good news, that means that she is competitive enough for them to take her, but they want to wait and see the rest of the applicant pool that haven't applied for early action. If I was the parent I would take it as good news!
 
As I tell my students, if you don't get rejected, you're still in the game. That being said, since wait list appointments aren't given until April or so, you should continue to pursue the Plan B options. If an appointment comes later in the spring, she should be able to get out of her other commitments.
 
I believe above post is good advice. In addition, there are a number of stories of wait listed kids who never get the call, pursue a strong plan B, and then are successful re-applicants.
 
In case it doesn't work out know that the academy really values 2nd and 3rd time applicants and from what I've seen if someone's life dream is to go to CGA and they work for it they will get in

It is not the best news, and not the worst. She's been deemed good enough, but not good enough to allocate a spot to just yet. It may come down to a geographic need, or possibly a need for one more female.

She's on a short list for a very few spots.
 
She's still in the game, I would consider that good news.

My son was given an appointment off the wait list last year. If I remember correctly, they offered appointments off the wait list starting at the beginning of May. It definitely made for a stressful spring....he had committed to another school, we had to cancel plans, he scurried around to renew his passport, get paperwork in order, and train for Swab Summer. But he had his heart set on CGA, so it was all worth it.

I would recommend that your daughter continue to stay in touch with her admissions rep. My son touched base with his rep every time he had something to add to his application (grades, sports accomplishments, etc). He was so passionate about attending the Academy, I'm guessing this really showed through.

If an EA applicant has been wait listed, is there any possibility that they will be reviewed again under RD?
 
from what I've read, the EA applicant will not be considered for RD. But doesn't mean that she won't get off the wait list after the RD appointments are made.
 
Unless the policy has changed, they do not turn to the wait list until after the RD cycle ends.

Last year, notification for the wait list began on May 1 (which I'm pretty sure coincided with the deadline for admits to accept their appointments). It makes for a long spring, but at least you're still in the running.
 
Can wait listed applicants take another SAT or ACT to improve their chances??? Will that bring up their score or put them ontop of wait list??
 
Yes, students on the wait list are encouraged to send updated scores, transcripts, etc. My son was very proactive about updating his admissions officer throughout last spring, sharing information like improved grades and awards/distinctions.
 
Can anyone shed some light on what the regular decision statistics were from the class of 2019. Are they usually lower than the EA stats? My son applied EA for the class of 2020 and his scores are right in line with the EA stats, but he has been wait listed. This came as a shock to us, because we know that his application was very competitive, leadership, athletics, clubs, class rank, grades and SAT scores. His brother is currently a 2nd class and he applied regular decision with virtually the same stats as his brother. My 2nd class was never wait listed. He received his unconditional appointment in late February. Is regular decision less competitive? Objee can you weigh in? Thanks

My daughter is in the same position. Although we don't have anyone else in the academy, her stats were on par with the EA stats. Her principal, her coaches & her counselors were all confused. She has updated her file with any new awards, a new PFE score etc but not sure if there is a fine line between showing how badly you want something and how much you are willing to work for it with being a nuisance? Makes me wonder if I should have tried to get her to wait for Reg. Decision but she only wants the CGA.

Why do EA kids get wait listed why can they be rolled over to Reg deciding ?? That is what most colleges do if not rejected?? They get deferred? I have son we will be applying in few yrs, wonder if better to do Reg vs EA??

Not sure. I just think it is there policy.
 
lombco, I wish your daughter much luck. CGA is an amazing institution. My 2nd class has had nothing but the most wonderful experiences during his past 2 1/2 years. It's awesome to see him grow and flourish under the constant watch, supervision and nurturing that he receives. He has been pushed to his limits and consistently broken through to the other side. There is a reason and a purpose for everything that CGA does...so we have to trust the process. I can't speak more highly about the school and his experiences. I only hope that my wait listed son eventually gets his appointment and is able to reap those same benefits. CGA remains his top choice. Good luck!

Thank you! I have heard nothing but wonderful things about the academy. My daughter has a healthy outlook on the process and believes this was meant to be so I am following her lead. Hopefully, our children will meet on R-Day. Best of luck to your son on admission and to your other son on his journey!
 
I'm curious if cmkigney's question can be answered. I have a hopeful 2021 candidate. USCGA is his first choice school and our first thought would be to apply EA. Seeing so many qualified candidates this year being wait listed, makes me think it would be better to wait for the regular decision pool. Any thoughts are most appreciated. Best wishes to everyone.
