I received an LOA to USAFA the last week of December, but had already had all of my nomination interviews and USMA was listed as my first choice. I only received a nomination to USMA, is this the end of the road for USAFA? If so, that is fine. I am just wondering because I know there is a national waiting list, but do you only get put on that if you have a nomination? Thank you for your help.

You might want to call the MOC that gave you the nomination and see if there is room to switch. Depending on how competitive your state is, they might not have filled their slate. You also should do it asap because I believe the deadline for MOC to submit their slates is January 31.

Give the admission office a call and express your desire to attend USAFA, but was not able to secure a nomination. The academy superintendent has nominations he/she can give out to certain number of candidates. My DS did at USNA.

I could be wrong, but I'd check with your ALO and the Congressional and senators' offices in your district. I say this because I Know of several preppies from last year, my kid was one of them, who had multiple nominations, but who only applied to USAFA. My daughter had 3 nominations: senator, congressional, and Presidential. She only needed one; moreover, she did not have an LOA in hand. What happened to the other 2? I bet they use those for candidates who basically have been told they have a strong chance for an appointment. I am sure admissions does not send out a mass of LOAs and so they want you. Again, I do not know what happens to the remaining nominations, but they have to go somewhere. Just a thought...

Just to be clear, USAFA does not give nominations out like candy to whomever they want in the applicant pool. In fact, they don't give out NOMs at all. The only candidates that can use those nominations must live in that particular state or live in that certain district. In order to use a presidential NOM you must be eligible. They used one of those NOMs for your DD and slated the others to another deserving candidate on that specific slate. Bottom line, yes, there are other places they can find a NOM such as VP and superintendent BUT, they DO NOT share NOMs between candidates of different states and you must have a NOM to get on the NWL.

I hope they find one for the OP.
