AOG Sponsored Appointment Rate

Does anyone know what percentage of West Point AOG sponsored civil preps receive appointments? The statistics on the MMI SAP homepage show 100% appointments but I do not believe they are counting students that voluntarily or involuntarily leave the program.

Is anyone aware of sponsored students that completed the program, but were not offered an appointment due to non-competitive grades, SAT/ACT, CFA scores?

When an applicant receives an AoG scholarship/sponsorship, the RC makes the recommendation on information based on the applicants WCS and may have been influenced from a local FFL. Usually the Candidate needed to be polished up a little more. As you know the candidate is 3Q'd but their ACT/SAT scores just aren't there but otherwise a very competitive candidate. The candidate is usually very motivated to attend WP, but a little apprehensive to invest another year of school while comparing themselves to others who are going off pressuring their goals. Not many leave or walk out of going to a civil prep school. I haven't heard of any but their may have been a few. The civil prep is an outstanding opportunity in two great ways. The civil prep school will polish up the candidate and will be better prepared to handle the academic load of 20 to 21 credit units through the 47 months at WP. The civil preps are in communications with the WP admin giving reports on progress and eventually a report with approval or no approval. Two, if the candidate decides not to pursue or is not accepted, their ACT/SAT scores will be higher and will have a wider range of colleges to select and be better prepared for college. Either way its a outstanding opportunity. MMI credits are transferable to colleges where applicable.

MMI is a great school. There are other civil prep schools available, have you investigate the others who also accept AoG scholarships?

The candidate will need to seek another nom source and MMI will be there to assist them. If they are not selected, by WP its no big deal. They will find their success!

Are the AOG offers made later in the process - wondering about time given to visit schools to choose from. And filling out of financial aid forms?

Im not to sure what you're asking. Are AoG scholars who have completed a year of prep offered appointments? Usually with the general wave based on their WCS, which is usually higher. Or when are AoG scholarships offered to applicants? Which is usually in April and then you can select the programs that best fit your needs.

I don't know of a base line for ACT/SAT cut off. It usually is based of RC recommendation when reviewing files. Depending on the year, there are about 40 to 50 given out.

I was asking about when the scholarships were given out- meaning is it usually April and then you have xx amount of time to decide between schools .....also because of financial costs.... Just trying to be prepared financially if that were to happen over plan b/c. Just have read how the cost of prep can add up real quick.

From what I understand civil prep offers are made late April/May after the Admissions office determines that they can't appoint these candidates. From what I understand Prep schools understand the timing so they are supposed to be very flexible with the application. My understanding is that the typical break out is AOG offers 1/3, the school offers 1/3, and the student pays 1/3. I believe Marion Military Institute is at the lower end of scale on the cost wise.

yes I had researched that part of the 1/3 cost and each schools tuitions but was lost on the cost of fees/ books/ sports/ uniforms etc. and factoring in flights or drives etc. so as precaution I will call and ask rough estimates ....just kept reading how quickly add up and you can end up spending upwards of 20k....and I couldn't imagine having to say no to prep because of the upfront cost. Trying to plan and prepare. Plans b/c are fully covered and have plan for even if something happens and it has to be d but hadn't planned for 1A.

DS had been told by WP if they offer him Prep it's not a question - take it !

I read how you have to be 2 q for usmaps but 3q and QNS for civil.
So I questioned the score cut off that needed a bump-DS has 31 act comp but 27 in math (geo not his thing but loves calc)and 35 in English and the curriculum at a civil prep with Chem and calc seemed
More suitable than USMAPs that stated they work on ACT prep and ink taught math and English unless I read it wrong.

Again, I am just overthinking it too much on my lunch break. Need to step away from the forum.

My guess is that your DS is more likely to academically qualified with 27 in math. The mean ACT math score is 29, with 17% scoring 21 - 25 and 48% scoring 26 -30.

USMAPS is mostly for recruited athletes, soldier applicants, and diversity candidates. Each year, there are about 2500 fully qualified candidates and 1400 offers, so there are about 1000+ QNS. Of those 1000+, 30 to 40 to Civil Prep.

Many civil prep schools offer grants and scholarships to help lower the costs. You have time to shop around and call the different schools. I tend to favor Northwester Prep, its much different than the others. NWP is located in Crestline, CA and also has a very high success rate. I would encourage you to give them a call. Give them all a call.

No, in order to attend USMAPS you must be DQ'd for academics. I completely understand I was in your shoes. Ask all the questions you can think of. We are here to help navigate through these waters.

As Tug said, you have to be academically disqualified to be considered for USMAPS.
This means:
- on SAT, below 560 on Math or CR.
- on ACT, below 24 on any section
OR
a low class rank
OR
a 'D' in any academic course

If the candidate receives an offer of sponsorship from AoG, they will still have time to apply for scholarship/ financial aid through one of the designated Prep Schools.

To answer your initial question, if a sponsored cadet does what they are supposed to and demonstrates academic progress in their prep school year while having no disciplinary issues, the appointment is theirs to be earned. I am sure there are exceptions out there, but I have not heard of any recent ones where a sponsored cadet in good standing missed out.
