hi guys,
I am sophmore girl in high school. I have kept almost all A's and just a few B's with a GPA of about 3.5. I take almost all seminar, and just a few honors courses, and am planning to take AP next year. I am in the German Honors society and actively participate in student council. I am a leader in the student council. I also am actively involved in rowing, an extreme team sport at a varsity level. I am, and always have been, extremely passionate about space and aeronautics/aerospace. Do I have a chance at getting appointed to the academy?
Thanks for the advice.

While nobody on here can definitively tell you, look around the forum and search for "chance me" threads to see what others are doing. Everyone will tell you keep working on the big things - academics (excel at challenging courses and work on ACT/SAT), athletics (aim for team captain and try out CFA), leadership (seek leadership positions in everything you do). You're a sophomore, so there's plenty of time to work on all of that. Best wishes.

If you search there are lots of answers regarding your question. Just do your best in your school, take more honors APs raise your GPA, try to be captain or Pres or vice, goto girl state, SLE, high SAT/ACT etc. best wishes

thank you for your reply. I do understand that no one on here can tell me yes or no but alumni and informed non-alumni can give me tips on how to make my application look better. Thanks again.

Im Also a sophomore and little higher GPA with a 3.7, but work on leadership that's what I have heard from everyone else when I asked the question remember that they superscore the SAT and ACT. Good Luck hope we both get in.

Your stats look really good to me, try to focus on a few key activities and gain leadership in those instead of spreading yourself too thin and not being very committed to anything. Most importantly, do things that you enjoy! Don't do something just cause it will boost your application. Make sure to have fun as well, try not to think about the academy too much. I know its hard. I really regret obsessing over it as much as I did because now that it is looking like I will not be able to go next year (no nomination, but I do have one for USNA, ironically) and I am really depressed and mad at myself - not fun. Make it a goal, but don't put all your eggs in one basket. Look at ROTC and the other service academies as well, they all have something unique to offer.

Concern yourself less about GPA's which don't count for much, than test scores and class rank. Obviously, if you do well in your GPA it will improve your rank. Focus on the classes you're taking, strength of schedule, leadership opportunity's you may have etc.As noted, enjoy yourself but recognize that this is in fact a competition...so the better you can position yourself in the realm of academics, standardized testing and the EC's the better off you're going to be . While EC's are impotant, etc. if you don't have the right balance of academics...math, english, chem, etc. and do well in those, as clearly outlined by the academy......you can be an all american everything in everything else and it won't make up for it.

You've got time on your side...put it to good use. I wish you the best.

Why not try again next year? My DD's plan D is actually to try again one more time if she doesn't get in this year. She will likely take a full college load that includes at least her bio sequence for pre-med so if she doesn't get into an SA the second year, she will still be moving in a great direction. When she visited the USNA, she found that a significant percentage of plebes were a year older because they'd been appointed their second time around rather than their first. They were actually glad it had worked out that way, as they were more ready for the rigors of an SA in every way. Also, requesting a nomination a second year shows your MOC that you are indeed committed. If your heart is in serving your country, then it will be worth the one-year wait.

Yes, I am actually planning to reapply next year, I heard something like 30% of cadets are not directly out of high school (entry from enlisted or college). I just couldn't see myself anywhere else after I visited. It is most likely a blessing in disguise even though it doesn't feel like it right now! Thanks for the encouragement!

That's the spirit! And think what a great "setback" personal statement it will make!

Also, sorry to high jack your thread nomo1316, haha. Best of luck, persistence and adaptability are the most key attributes to success in the military in my opinion. If you really want it you will succeed! Let me know if you have any questions about the process from someone who has been through it all before.

I am 44 yrs old and spending one year of your life improving yourself and exploring life before USNA can be the best thing you will ever do, you will be so much more prepared & confident than others right out of high school. Heck go travel, get job, learn new hobby, study aboard, teach English aboard, so many options. Right now is hard cuz your friends are talking about college & some family member making rude comments, but sometimes better to think out of the box & be different:)

I actually just realized my GPA has changed with semester courses to a 3.6. Yes, definitely work on leadership. Good luck!

It's all cool. Yeah I have a few questions.
How much off-campus time do you get?
Would it be helpful if I learned how to fly before USAFA?
I also am a competitive rower and would like to continue that in college, so I have also been considering USNA and being on their rowing team and going into the airborne division. Your opinions on that decision?

Thanks for the advice! Yes, I have been considering USNA and other ROTC opportunities but I think USAFA is definitely my first choice currently. Thanks again!

I actually don't really know the answer to those kind of questions since I'm not at the Air Force Academy (yet) haha. But there are a lot of people on these forums who can give you tips about those kind of things, also searching the forums is great for past advice!
