Special Forces or Rangers after attending an Academy?

Hi all,

I would like to know if it's possible for a graduate from any of the academies to become an officer in the Special Forces or Rangers and how one would achieve that if they could.

At USNA the way to get there is SEALs. ~35 slots these days for those billets. You can also go Marine Spec Ops, but I believe you have to serve for a few years as a Marine then can apply for it, then pass any screeners, then pass the training before being designated. That is how the Army side works also.

Special Forces and the Ranger Regiment are Army units, so unless you cross commission you'll need to go into the army to get there. Don't confuse Special Forces (army only) with Special Operations Forces (all branches have SOF units).

In order to get into SF as an officer, you must first be in a basic branch (infantry, armor, signal, whatever, etc.) and when they open up applying to your year group, you apply and if accepted then you attend selection. For the Ranger Regiment, it's somewhat similar because there is an application process, but it's a little different than SF. You can visit their recruiting websites for a more in-depth explanation.

Attending Ranger School is something entirely different from being in the Ranger Regiment, and you can attend that school right after commissioning.

Remember that Rangers and Special Forces Soldiers, though having many of the same capabilities, are different.
