Hello everyone,

My son received news recently that he is being boarded for a scholarship in his freshman year of college (He is in Air Force ROTC). His stats look something like this:

CGPA: 3.7
PFT: 95
ACT: 29
Non-Tech Major

Does anyone know the average stats for a recipient of a non-tech scholarship last year around this time? What kind of chance is he looking at for getting some type of scholarship?

Thank you!

From my cadre:

Non-technical majors:
CGPA: 3.8
PFT: 95.2
ACT: 28

Technical majojrs:
CPGA: 3.5
PFT: 94.6
ACT: 29

Those are averages. Unfortunately, we can't determine his chances because it really depends on how much money the Air Force has left. Good luck! I'm competing for one as well.
Technical major: 3.77 GPA, 95 PFA, and 29 ACT. I'm right around the averages.

bradyl13,

The OPs DS is not competing for an HSSP, but an ICSP because they are already in college. The big difference is that there have been years that HQ AFROTC cancelled the ICSP. The reason why is there is, as has been stated they have a limited pot of gold for every year group.
~ IE HQ always expects a certain #/% of HSSP recipients not to activate the scholarship come the fall
~~ Be it going to an SA or activating a different ROTC branch.

Now if the % that did activate is higher than they planned, they may decide not to offer any ICSPs.

Just as nobody here knows how many HSSPs will be offered, nobody knows how many will be on the table for the college cadets applying for the In College Scholarship. For all was know they may say they only have 50, or, than again they could have 250. The commonality is that it is a national board, and they are going to look at if they are tech or non-tech.

Goalienub,

The positive is that your DS has Command support and believes in him. I understand that getting his tuition paid for via scholarship is amazing, but next year with or without the scholarship he will be boarded again, and this time that board will be the make or break. That board is thee Summer Field Training (SFT).

All AFROTC scholarships, including the HSSP is really a 2+2 scholarship. If not selected for SFT as an AS200/250 (soph yr) than there is a very high chance that HQ AFROTC will dis-enroll the cadet. Goodbye scholarship.

The CoCs rec/ranking is a huge chunk of the score for SFT selection, thus this is a good sign for him as a cadet with regards to how the CoC sees him now as a cadet.

Ahhhhh I read that wrong! Thank you thank you once again for picking out my mistake!

Does NROTC & AFROTC give out similar amount of scholarships to technical top tier majors, heard Navy is more competitive?? Is this true??

Pima,

Thank you so much for your detailed input. This has definitely clarified the whole situation more. It does appear that his CoC ranking will carry the most importance in the coming years. But either way, we'll be hoping for the best in the next few weeks!

NROTC gives out statistically around 85% and AFROTC is right on their heels with around 80%. For AFROTC the break down goes a little deeper. 5% of all scholarships go to type 1. 95% of all those scholarships are Tech. 15% go to Type 2, and @ 85% of those awarded are tech. The remaining 80% go type 7. 75% of those are Tech.

Wow receiving AFROTC type 1 is 5%!! That is low, getting into USNA is 7.9%?? My younger son is not as academic as my older son who received appointment to USNA, luckily he is an excellent swimmer:)

This year, NO non-tech majors were awarded ICSP scholarships.

I've heard from cadre that the boards have yet to meet for ICSP awards, so I'm not sure if this is valid or not. Where did you get your information from?

Are you talking about phase I or II? Either way, the scholarship board for 200s and 250s that convened in Fall 2015, there were 3 non-techs selected at my school.

Our cadre nominated 7/55 100s for a scholarship this upcoming ICSP. There were 3 techs and 4 non-techs.
