My son attended AIM and there really wasn't a discussion on being a part of the band. He would probably highly consider this if accepted.

Anyone have any information?

Feel free to reach out CWO3 Frankel about the various musical groups. Also know that during the first few days of swab summer, the swabs are asked about their interest in the music program, and everyone who is interested is welcome to join. My DD was in band early in her high school career, but due to sports commitments had to drop band. She was excited to join the swab summer band and continue on in the regimental band during the academic year. I highly recommend that if your DS/DD has any musical ability, they should join the swab summer band. DD says band is a lot of fun, and it is much better than having to drill with the company. Beyond band, there is Windjammers Drum and Bugle Corp which travels and performs during the fall, and opportunities to play during chapel services. Many cadets have instruments in their rooms (with special approval) and get together and play quite often. DD actually took a banjo on R-Day, and has since then added a guitar and ukulele to her collection. If your DS/DD has a musical instrument, plan on bringing it on R-Day. More information about this will be in the appointment packet.

For those that sing, contact Dr. Newton, as there are many opportunities for that as well.

Banjoooooooooooo!!!!

Banjos rock! My travels are taking me to Oklahoma at the end of the month to visit family, and I am planning a trip to OKC to the American Banjo Museum. They just opened a Steve Martin exhibit.

Just to clarify, DD plays banjo at chapel services, and in her own time. She plays percussion in the regimental band. They don't have marching banjos yet! ;)

I would have a hard time marching and picking at the same time.

I want to get to that museum. I heard it focuses mostly on four-string banjos, but they've got some neat five-strings too.

Take a photo of the Deering Banjosaurus for me.

Will do!:)

I really appreciate the link provided, it was helpful.

He's a saxophone player/contra alto, however we own an Alto Sax only. Thank you for letting us know about bringing it along if he's heading north!

alaska66- I showed him this site last night and he's been reading through the posts, so he will see your personal response concerning DD. Thank you for responding and giving more incite. He's been a sax player since 5th grade, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band (w/solo pieces) and Marching Band (woodwind captain). This information will give him something to think about, if he'd like to continue with music.

He definitely will have a lot of opportunity to play. Also, he can consider becoming a part of Windjammers (which counts as a fall sport). I know of one cadet who plays saxophone who learned to play mellophone for Windjammers. He had no previous experience and CWO3 Frankell provided the instrument and lessons for him. Here's a link for the Facebook page for the Windjammers. They perform at all home football games and have also performed for the NFL NY Giants and NY Jets. https://www.facebook.com/Coast-Guard-Academy-Windjammers-Drum-and-Bugle-Corps-255645357799177/

Also, check out this thread about 3 talented 2/c at USCGA (it includes the sax player I mentioned above). http://www.serviceacademyforums.com/index.php?threads/very-talented-cadets.45821/

DD is very happy to be able to be active in the musical groups (she also plays two varsity sports at CGA). The groups are very welcoming and flexible.
