Does anyone know what this course is like at USAFA. If I take this my first semester will I not have to take Math 152 because I'll have enough Math credits?

What's the course title? I'm looking at the math department page and don't see a Math 130.

But assuming it's a remedial math class, you'll still be taking Calc I and II.

This year at least, there is no Math 130. I've heard of a remedial math class in this past, but now all students start in Calc I (Math 141) or Calc II (Math 152) if they validate Calc I first semester. There are even a few students who start in Calc III. Second semester, students who took Math 141 take either Math 142 or Math 152. Both are Calc II, but 152 moves a bit faster than 142 and covers a couple extra topics.

Pretty sure it's not currently offered. Where did you get the course number from?

I haven't heard of anybody starting in a math lower than 141 here. The Prep School has a couple of classes that sound similar to the one you're describing, but I couldn't find a Math 130 in their catalog. It might be an outdated class(?).

Is Calc I at the academies similar to Calculus taken in high school?
I'll let a cadet reply for USAFA, but my experience has been that college courses are nothing like HS courses - APs included! 3+ semesters of chemistry was done in 1 in a state university class. Similar with the calculus, computer science, and physics courses.

EDIT: Obviously, many of the principles are the same (the math doesn't change) but the pace and depth of the course will be different.

Based on the website, Math 130 is only offered if the Math department says you need to take it to reinforce Algebra and basic math. I do not know of anyone currently taking it. Classes at USAFA are different than high school: most meet every other day, there are a lot fewer graded assignments, and you are expected to do more preparation before class. If you have any more specific questions I will be happy to answer.

I have talked to some people who took that class in the past (I believe it was available for the Class of 2016), but it has since been dropped from the curriculum as far as I know. Math 141 is made for people with no calculus experience, so if you took it at all in high school, you should be fine.

Don't worry about it. You will take a placement test during BCT -- after being beat for a few hours on little sleep. USAFA will tell you wee you should be, and they are pretty good about figuring that stuff out.

Since we are talking about classes, typically how large or small are the majority of the classes at USAFA?

Most classes that I've had so far have had between 15 and 20 people. I've had one class that is more like 35 people. I've heard that some major's classes can be very small, but that totally depends on your major.

Agreed, in fact, some majors don't even have 20 people from each class year in the major. 2016 has less than 20 Astro engr majors I believe

My ’16 son is a Computer Engineering major and I think I remember him saying recently there are only 10 kids left in his major that will graduate in June.
