How many of the appointments offered were to sport recruits?

I have been religiously watching the USNA 2020 Appointment thread and was curious to know how many of the offered appointments were recruited for a varsity sport and/or blue-chipped?

Thank you for letting me know. My sister and I are hoping to get recruited for a sport and are anxiously awaiting a portal update, so any info regarding that matter helps. Also, congrats to you and your son!

Yes, that is what I said. USNA doesn't publish stats on how many appointments go to recruited athletes. Same question on some other thread I saw recently.

I fail to see how having this information helps.
Also, wouldn't you would know whether you are being recruited by now?

^^ Probably a variation on the many 'what are my chances?' threads.

As former athlete at USNA, I can tell
you if you don't know if you are being recruited or not, you aren't. Has a coach called? What did they say? Have you done an NCAA visit? Did your register with the clearinghouse?

Not sure, but I think soflosailor just wants to know about those who have posted their appointments, who were recruited athletes! Guess he just wants to get an idea about how they were appointed early and is that the reason.

Both my sister and I are NCAA eligible. We came in contact with the coach before Summer Seminar and he told us to meet him there, which we did. Then he asked us to try and attend the sports camp over the summer, which we did. Then he asked for film. While we were gathering film, we sent our travel season schedule and he told us he would go to a tournament. We sent film and have not been given a yes or a no, so we're just wondering since there is a growing list of appointments and two boys in our area were recruited for football, what are odds of still being recruited?

Ask him by email or phone, but the actual detail specifics of the sport communication such that it identified the parties need not be revealed, here. IMHO the NCAA IS as evil as it gets. Some sports are not NCAA sanctioned. Its a bit easier to discuss.

So it sounds like you aren't even sure if you are being recruited for an SA sport. If you haven't heard back from the coach by now in late February, my answer would be ......no, you aren't being recruited. The status of other athletes wouldn't matter if you aren't even being recruited.

I had to get NCAA certified as a coach to bring my teams to NCAA events during the open recruitment periods. I've had a number of my players recruited.

Sorry to say that NavyHoops is of course correct. If you were being recruited, you'd know for sure.

Now, does that mean you won't get in, or won't make the team? Of course not. Keep in contact with the coach and keep trying.

There are strict rules that apply to the recruitment process, very strict. Now since these aren't true athletic scholarships, there may be some exceptions compared to other civilian schools. Many Hoops could add some detail to that.

Good luck!

I agree. It sounds like the coach has some interest but wasn't going to use any Blue Chip spots on you. Being actively recruited you would know. Coaches can call 1/week due to NCAA rules. USNA follows all NCAA rules. The only exception the NCAA gives to SA is they allow recruits to be spoken to a few months early and SAs do not participate in the NLI process.Remember communication initiated by you doesn't count in most circumstances. For those being recruited you get these calls weekly. Heck in high school way back before cell phones I got the point I dreaded them. The coach would also be talking to you about your application because they would have eyes on it as it goes through the process. I knew exactly what was going on with my application as the coach continually was asking for more info, data, status of things like DODMERB. If you aren't getting these two things, then I would say no to the recruitment part. Not trying to be Debbie downer on you guys but that is the reality and USNA and D1 sports is a big time reality check. D1 sports are brutal in many aspects, remember coach's livelihoods are based upon a bunch of 17-23 year olds. Now this doesn't preclude you from walking on to the team next year if you are appointed. Good luck.

In any large D1 athletic department there will be anywhere from 400-600 student athletes so roughly around 1/4 of them would be incoming freshmen who I assume have to have a nomination as well to be appointed.

I can pretty much guess the sport and coach with the information you provided. If you get an Appointment the coach is not going to tell you 'no'

You will be told when tryouts are and may get out of some things during Plebe Summer to go and work out and the coaches will give you a shot, but they aren't promising you a spot.

And though they don't promise anyone a spot, if they spent cycles calling you every week and have been watching you play during high school - that 'shot' will last longer

Many moons ago, I was in BCT and the speaker said if you are a recruited football player report here. At least 10-15% of my classmates thought they were the recruits.

Just a couple of weeks later, they figured out not only who was really recruited but what D1 sports entailed and they returned to the intramural program.

If you get an appointment it won't be because your recruiting status helped you out. If you are going to USNA to play a sport at the D1 level, you should think hard about the likelihood of that happening

^^ However, all were not recruited and since no one pays tuition at a SA, the implication of being 'recruited' (i.e. sports scholarship) is different from a civilian college. If you decide to drop that sport at the SA, nothing really changes.

If you are referring to their status in h.s., USNA DOES publish figures that shows 90+% were varsity athletes in h.s.
