Can you appeal a "Negative" Decision on NROTC Scholarship?

Believe me this is not a typical case nor is is sour grapes. We are just trying to possibly write a wrong that was out of our DS control. Our DS application for Navy ROTC Scholarship was complete in late fall. Our DS is a member of the first graduating class at his high school. This has really been challenging with respect to guidance counselors being able to help and provide accurate information to the seniors. It was brought to our attention on Feb 9th, that the ENTIRE senior class GPA and Class Rank as well as volunteer hours were inaccurate due to a system glitch while transitioning from one system to another in late fall. This was only brought to our attention when all of the students (80) that had applied for FL Bright Futures scholarships were denied. This GLITCH caused my DS transcript that were provided in his application packet to reflect.... GPA of 3.1 UW and 4.1 W when in reality it should have been 3.8 UW and 4.6 W. His class rank was submitted as 30 instead of 4 and they only submitted 10 Volunteer hours instead of over 500.
We are not saying for sure this was the deciding factor but believe it definitely could have had a significant impact. We submitted the corrected transcript via email along with a letter from the school on Feb 9th but the same day the portal was updated to "We are sorry but you were not selected.....".
Is there anything we can do???:(:(

Nightmare . . . private school or public school? . . . what action (if any) is the Principal or Superintendent willing to take? Any "letters of explanation" and "updated transcripts" being written?

Not sure about the current situation, since it's doubtful scholarship decision will be reversed, but it's definitely worth bringing attention to the recruiters handling the case.

In the meantime:
1) Have DS reapply for the 4 year scholarship for the following year. This can be done.
2) DS should enroll as a college program midshipman at the university he wants to attend and set himself up for a sideload.

My son is a Marine Option on a 4 year scholarship awarded to him after being declined. It will essentially be a 3 year scholarship, but it was awarded via the 4 year process and not a sideload.

Best wishes and keep moving foward.

Rocatlin touched on exactly what I would say. I would have the school write a letter with all the details. Contact NROTC, but be prepared for a sorry response. Prepare for Plan B, if that include NROTC at a school, then start preparing to reapply.

Tell me about it! Public Charter School...They gave me a letter stating there was a GLITCH and a copy of the updated transcript which DS promptly scanned and emailed to PCOLA....later that night his portal was updated so it was a too late. DS sent another email a week later inquiring but has heard nothing. He has reached out to the local recruiter who handled his initial app but all he is doing is pushing (he was so pushy initially my husband had to tell him to back off ) for my DS to just enlist and go NUKE (DS got max ASVAB) DS is also dual enrollment, graduating from local college in April Magna Cum Laude and graguates fron the high school end of MAY

Thank you all!! Pretty much what we had thought. :(
DS has already been accepted, early decision to all of his top 5 colleges...TAMU, GTech, Penn State, Norwich & Embry Riddle. Thank god his apps and transcripts were sent out before the GLITCH. Can not imagine if DS had been denied acceptance due to same GLITCH...Glass half full right??o_O:bang:

Well the good news is those are all great options. I would definitely touch base with whatever school he selects that he will be joining the det in the fall without a scholarship and he plans to reapply with updated information. Good luck to him. Its also a great lesson for future officers. I know transcripts are sealed and its one of those things you have little control over in terms of high school. But as a future officer and as an officer you will go before many boards. Its an Officer's responsibility to keep their record accurate, up to date with the most info and ready to go for all those boards. So I am sure this lesson will make him extremely diligent over records he has control of in the future!

As NavyHoops said above, I'd start doing some research and making some calls to the PMS at each school and give them a brief rundown on what occurred. I'd ask what the odds are of getting a campus based scholarship as well. I would *imagine* that it's harder at monster schools with a boatload of cadets like TAMU or Penn State but I could be totally off base. We have a friend who went to Emory Riddle in Prescott and was given a campus based scholarship....really without the proper credentials and he was in over his head in the 1st semester and not only left the ROTC program but dropped out of school to enlist.

Every year is different and I can't speak for NROTC but my son was passed over for the National scholarship but then had a school contact him directly and offer him a 4 year scholarship before school even started his Freshman year. He'll be graduating in May with a 3.5 GPA and going Active Duty. Just waiting for BOLC dates now. The bottom line is there are options but YOUR SON needs to start reaching out to the ROTC units at the schools he is REALLY interested in attending to see what his options are.

Thank you all so much for your input, it is greatly appreciated! DS has already been in contact with the units at his top 2 and will definitely be pursuing that.

Not as bad as your situation but it took me over a month and having to develop my own spreadsheet to prove to our HS Principal that their system down-graded our son's GPA by .3 unweighted when he transferred in his sophmore year. Sorry to hear about the impact to your DS.

Your mention of BOLC leads me to believe your son has an AROTC scholarship.Unlike ARMU, to he best of my knowledge, Navy does not give out campus based scholarships. It's either a sideload (national competition involving many pages of application for which one cannot apply until second semester sophomore year) or the national high school scholarship which they can reapply for as a freshman.

I'm sure someone will pipe up if I'm mistaken.

EDIT: I meant second semester of freshman year.

I applied to USCGA and did not get in so I started NROTC as a college programmer in hopes of getting some letters of recommendation from the CO but ended up getting a sideload 3 year scholarship after my second semester so I don't think one has to wait until second semester sophomore year.

If a commission in the Navy is the end game, I would definitely recommend joining as a college programmer and trying for a sideload scholarship. If you're a stud and your staff advisers know it, you'll have a good shot at a 3 year scholarship. Good luck.

Huummm....now I have more questions...Will my DS be eligible for the National Scholarship next year? I only ask because he will have 62 college credits at the end of April due to dual enrollment. He is actually graduating from the local State College with his associates prior to graduating high school. He was eligible to apply this year because all of his college credits were "prior to high school graduation"... 53 of those credits are transferable to the Universities he has applied to..... sooo.... if we add in an additional year of college that puts him at at least another 30 credits. Questions, Questions, Questions!!

Very sad that you had to do that. I understand that no one is perfect but, they need to realize that they do hold the futures of these young men and women in their hands. IMHO ...it is unacceptable!

If he's applying with between 30 and 120 credit hours he's only eligible for a 3 year scholarship. My friend had an associates degree and got a 4 year scholarship from high school but it was an ASR which is a totally different conversation.

If your DS will be starting collage as a Sophomore / Junior consider the NUPOC (Nuclear propulsion officer candidate) program. YOU are eligible if you are within 36 months of graduation. It would also assume that DS would want to be a submariner. https://www.navy.com/joining/college-options/nupoc.html

Yes another opportunity for me to promote the program.

For me it came down to the money. Even with 36 months of benefits, E-6 pay and BAH was still not as much as tuition for the same amount of semesters at 18-20 credit hours/semester at the non-resident rate.

Actually, funny that you suggest that :D:D:D ... my DS found this program online and is quite interested. He has tried for the past week to get additional info on the program. He contacted local recruiter and they did not know any more than he knew from the USN website. They were just trying to get him to enlist NUKE. He called the 1-800 # and they took his name and # but no call back as of yet.
DS would like to confirm he can go SWO in the NUPOC program?? or does he have to go subs (no choice you go where they send you kind of thing)...
DS plan is to double Major or at the least, major and minor in Mechanical engineering / Nuclear Engineering

Ok...DS will have to remember this and weight options. Thanks!

Yes you can go SWO(N) through NUPOC. Just some additional info, he will have to pass a phone interview and then the interview in D.C. first. After graduation, if he goes the SWO way, he'll qualify SWO and then go to power school and prototype.
