Are we responsible for paying all of the required tests ourselves? (Dentist, immunization, optometrist exam, etc) also, why is another optometrist exam required?

Another (different) question is:
There is LOTS to do, but some things don't appear in our portals yet; what steps can we take first to speeden the proccess? What files are the easiest to upload, and which tend to take longer to complete? Any advise on how exactly to get started and rolling?

I can't really answer your entire question, BUT I can maybe help a bit. For the optometry exam, all it is (for those who wear glasses) is your eye doctor (or really the secretary) writing out your prescription on the form and having the doctor sign it. I was also annoyed thinking that it would be a whole exam, but I was "In-n-Out" in less than 5 minutes. As for the immunizations, use your Documented Shot Records to record what you have already received that is required for USMA. For the shots you still need to get, payment will really depend on your Insurance Company (Tricare Prime pays for them, like 95% sure). As for the dentist, if you already have the panarex/bitewings documented, you should be fine. If not, you will most likely have to pay out of pocket (Again, I believe Tricare Prime will cover this). I too wish that we didn't have to pay out of pocket, BUT HEY, we get a college education for free (financially at least)!

@hamleton - you mention Tricare (prime but leave out standard) which only will make sense for current/retired military and their dependents, which is only a fraction of the population on here. BTW, Dental for dependents is a separate insurance that your parent has to elect to have deducted from their pay otherwise it is completely out of pocket (unless you are OCONUS in which case dependents can see the dentist space available).

Thank you for the information. I did not mean to come off as an "expert" in any way, this is just from my personal experience. (Already had panarex and bitewings completed, immunizations are covered). I'm glad you were able to clear up any mistakes that other viewers may have been confused by.

thanks! But, what do we do if we don't use glasses and never ad an optometrist exam, besides the Dodmerb one?

When my son did this last year, he was instructed where to go for the eye exam. We had to call to set up an appointment. There was no cost to us for the eye exam.
I don't know if they are doing things differently this year.

Thw documents that appear on our portal (PDF file) are the ones that we're supposed to print and take to their respective offices aaand theeen send them to West Point? Or are we going to receive by mail the official documents that they're supposed to fill out?

If you don't wear glasses, you would note that on the form. The form is to be sure you are issued the correct glasses on Rday. If you don't wear glasses, you won't be issued any.

If you need your wisdom teeth removed, consider a consult with an oral surgeon during Spring Break.

My RC said if you hadn't had your wisdom teeth out at this point that you should probably wait... Any complication could potentially be a disqualifier.
What would make it a disqualifier? I am scheduled for first week of June. Should I cancel it?

Any sort of complication would be a disqualifier. That is sooo close to when we report... I was going to do mine in April and my RC called me immediately warning against it. It's up to you, but if you can wait, why risk it?

We were specifically told to get wisdom teeth taken care of. We go tomorrow

Who told you and in what capacity? If you passed DoDMERB, then you have passed

If you have the procedure, you will have to declare to USMA and DoDMERB and paperwork will follow.

You should consult DoDMERB and USMA before undergoing a medical procedure this close to I Day.

I don't know the answer, but I would find out before letting the bureaucracy handle it later.

And by find out - I would have the regulation quoted.

Below is what it says under DoDMERB at the USNA Admissions Portal.

If any illness, surgery, or injury has occurred since the time of your initial DODMERB medical examination, send details and substantiating doctor's statement to nomapps@usna.edu.

For information regarding your medical exam or status please visit the DODMERB website.

End

My 2018 had his wisdom teeth out during spring break after his appointment and before R-day. My 2020 appointee will do the same.

This comes up every single year for appointees at all the SAs. It is mixed advice every single year. There is no requirement to get them removed. Some folks say to get them out before going so you won't have to do it there. I had mine removed at USNA, as do 100s of kids each year at each SA. Its not that big deal to miss a Friday class, sleep it off and back at it on Monday. Sure recovering in your room, sponsors, etc isn't as much fun as when mom brings you ice cream! The issue with wisdom teeth for anyone is obviously any complications that arise. Dry sockets, infections, etc. Yes, according to DODMERB it says to report any changes. I have never seen anyone become DQ after getting them out, but this forum doesn't cover anyone and we all know DODMERB is a general mystery in of itself. For the candidate getting them out the first week June... I would really talk to your doctor about this. What if you do get dry sockets, etc? The last thing you want it to show up on I Day on antibiotics and told you can't swear in. Honestly, talk it over with your dentists, decide whats best for each candidate and if you don't do it, its not a big deal.
