I'm getting ready to commission from AFROTC - does anybody know when/how should you buy your uniforms? We've been told we can either turn our current ones in that we were issued or buy them at a reduced price... will we get a uniform stipend or anything to buy new ones? I really don't want to keep mine after 4 years of use, but I'd like to shop around and not just pay full price at AAFES for everything.

I also would like to get some new ABU boots and high gloss dress shoes, since I've just been wearing what they originally issued. Any recommendations about any really good ones out there?

Don't really know the answers to the ABU stuff, but what job will you be doing?

If you're civil engineering, rated, or anything that requires composite or steel toe, they will issue you boots.

If you're doing something that doesn't, the Rocky C4Ts are quite comfortable, and so are the Nike boots

You do get uniform allowance
But also you get an additional amount of money for uniform allowance just from commissioning from ROTC.

DOD FMR Volume 7a Chapter 30 Paragraph 3003.

My DS will be commissioning in a couple of month, Marine Corps. His dress blues and other fancy items he needs will cost about $1100, according to a site I found. He led me to believe that the cost of this will be on us. Oh, not to mention the $500 sword. LOL

They don't have to be on you. If the same thing holds true they only need their blues for graduation and then when they get to TBS they get fitted for the rest. It could of changed by now. They offer uniform loans that they can pay back over a short time. They were extremely low interest rates, like 1% or so. Could of changed, but it's a viable option and one a lot of Lts use. The initial uniform allowance is pretty low for an officer, your DS should know the amount.

AJ1232,

I can confirm later, but I believe you will get a $500 uniform allowance on your first LES. When MyPay is up I will confirm.

For boots I would say the Rocky C4Ts or the Nikes also.

Thanks for the thoughts. That would be nice if there is a stipend for a little bit of reimbursement, even if it doesn't come until after starting on AD. My current rough estimate for all the uniform items, if purchased from AAFES, is just under $2000....

As an officer you'll get an initial uniform allowance, which won't cover everything, but it's something. Only enlisted folk get a yearly clothing allowance, as far as the Army goes.

Same applies for the AF.
