Hello everyone, this is my first post. I am currently a senior in CA District 9. From the 2020 appointee list, I see the first entry is for someone also in my district. However, I was given the principal nomination by my MOC. I should be 3q. My CFA didn't need to be retaken, I have a 4.0 GPA UW, and ACT 35 Eng, 35 Reading, 34 math, and 36 science. I am medically cleared. Will I have to compete in the NWL if there was only one spot for USAFA from my MOC that is now taken? Thanks for the input.

If you're a principal nom, by law USAFA is required to give you an appointment if you are qualified. Where the SA charges appointments is their problem - also, that appointment might have been Prez/Senate/ROTC/etc. noms. Your MOC could also have multiple spots open. There are a lot of variables, but you should be fine. Best wishes!

Foundnation sounds like you are in business!! Let me start with a resounding CONGRATULATIONS for you receiving the principal nomination, there were quite a few very very good candidates from district 9 this year! Job well done! Get four more posts under your belt on this forum and you will be able to send private messages. Send me a PM, I have some info that will help answer your questions ;)

Until then I can tell you as a principal nominee you will not have to compete on the NWL, your nomination is set. Just confirm you are indeed 3Q. I look forward to you posting on the 2020 appointment list soon.

ps, McNerney had 2 slots available for the USAFA this year.

Not sure if this is true, but I remember reading that SA's can deviate from who the MOC names his/her principle nom. IOW, the person that the MOC names his/her principle nominee is simply a suggestion from the MOC and the SA does not have to listen to this suggestion, the SA can choose someone else to be the principle nominee.

Congratulations, Foundnation! I'm kmldad2020's DS, please feel free to pm me as well. I look forward to seeing you there!

Thanks so much! Would I ask my counselor if I'm 3q?

Thanks a bunch! I appreciate your time and response!

How do you know you are 3Q?
You don't unfortunately. You can assume if you didn't receive a request to retake, CFA is fine. Scholastic is the toughest to judge. More than just ACT/SAT/GPA is at play, as many threads will point out. DoDMERB is obvious medical qualified or not.

Thank you!!! I was not sure if this was something sent out or "self determined"

Can there be more than one principal nominee?
If there is more than one open position for that academy from that nomination source yes. If there is only one then there can only be one principal nominee with alternates. Otherwise nominators submit a slate of 10 candidates and let the academy choose

I also received a principal nom. To USAFA from CA district 9

Excellent!! See my message above (#3), very impressive! It is really refreshing for me to see so many highly motivated, talented, productive, capable, smart young men & women with grounded morals and character. I am proud of you and proud to be an American!!!
:usa:

Let me know if you have any questions, I would be glad to help. Also, my DS (kml2020) accepted his appointment to USAFA 2020. Send him a PM if you like & he will give you his contact info. Congrats on the principal nomination!!

Can there be more than one principal nominee?

In this case, this MOC had two openings for the USAFA for this year. Which means he could (and did) submit two ranked slates of ten, each with a principal nominee.

Foundnation, did you get my PM?

How do you find out how many slots the MOC has, and how many they nominated?

I assume each MOC has nuances. In my case I spoke to the MOC's staffer that handles the nomination process. He has been doing it for years, very knowledgeable and extremely helpful.
