Hi. Disclaimer: I've never been in the military so if I use some unconventional terms, sorry.

There was a former student that came to my school a couple days ago from Norwich to see some teachers from years past and he was wearing his acu ( think that is what it's called, it's the camo green one that Army gives you). I thought that students had to wear their dress uniforms and could not wear their acu's outside of school? Am I wrong? I was just wondering because this surprised me

If it is a privately run school, the rules may be different. If he is representing the Army ROTC, I don't know their regulations.

Well it is Norwich so it is private run. My high school is not private. Does anyone know? Maybe current student or alum?

What are the regulations for someone in AROTC with wearing uniforms outside of the actual school where they are attending and participating in AROTC?

Was he wearing it on behalf of AROTC or Norwich? Based on my very very limited understanding of Norwich, they wear different insignia for AROTC and the school...I think. (Don't quote me)

Good friend had a kid at Norwich. He did wear his ACU's when he came home. Hell, they wear them now in airports and the grocery store (it looks sloppy) why not at a school visit. I got screamed at for hands in pockets, no cover while asking directions at the gate, going into the cleaners in fatigues and Gig line off by a guarter inch at inspection, Never was allowed to travel in less than Class A. It was old time. I think the Marines still have restrictions on travel in uniform but AROTC may have gone with a new procedure.

According to the Norwich Corp of Cadets SOP
5-13. Class C Army Combat Uniform (ACU). (See Figure 5-8)
  1. When worn: The Class C ACU is worn during training in the field or garrison environment and work/cleaning details. The ACU is authorized off campus, but is prohibited at establishments whose primary business is the sale of alcohol, or for any commercial travel.

I used to see the Norwich Rooks in their Class As getting on the Amtrak train to Vermont at Metropark and Newark train stations. My son hated wearing those on the train when he was a rook. The freshman had to wear those.

Active duty folks in D.C. wear whatever each service calls cammo. I can't figure that out. I understand overseas or in some kind of operational billet, but working behind a desk at the Pentagon? Wear suit-equivalent.

Full uniform of the day was required at AF as an instructor (no fatigues). I don't think Marines allow travel in Cammo or in the Pentagon. It may have change but DD would never wear less than full uniform of the day behind her desk.

The uniform of the day is required at Norwich.
As it was during a school break I imagine the cadet was out of uniform.
wearing a uniform is only required within 50 miles of the school.

It would really depend on the school's local regulations/guidance. By AR 670-1 (Army uniform policy) most of this stuff is left to commander discretion with a few exceptions (Funerals, court appearances etc...). That being said I know when I was in charge of new cadet recruiting my senior year at VMI cadets wore the cadet dress uniform (grey) to conduct high school recruiting. I would be hesitant to say they are unauthorized to wear ACUs without knowing local commander direction and policy.

AH the great Blueberries. Over the side and you melt right in. DD had to buy regular Cammo at induction then Blueberries then MC Cammo after graduation. Lots of bucks for uniform changes.

No kidding... At least you know they are all Made in USA. Of course there is a price to pay for ultimately getting to wear the best looking USMC uniforms!
