Need Advice-hernia

I need some advice. It is almost the end of February and we just found out that son may have a hernia -- need to get confirmation from surgeon. He had his DoDMERB physical 4 months ago and no hernia was identified. He is still awtg admission decisions from the acadamies. His current DoDMERB medical status is disqualified for an unrelated issue but he is working through it and is hopeful a waiver would be granted. The question is, if the hernia is confirmed, should he have surgery right away? Recovery is 4 weeks, so he could be cleared by early April if no complications. Or does this issue, and its timing, leave him disqualified for no chance of a waiver?
 
You need 6 months recovery from abdominal laparoscopic surgery to be qualified. I do not know if they would waive the time requirement.

(1) Current hernia, including, but not limited to uncorrected inguinal (550) and other abdominal wall hernias (553), do not meet the standard.
(2) History of open or laparoscopic abdominal surgery during the preceding 6 months (P54) does not meet the standard.
 
Thank you. Which do you think would be more likely? A waiver of current hernia, or a waiver of hernia surgery within last 6 months?
 
IDK, but as you know you want to put your DS health above all.

I have a feeling that you are not going to get the expert advice you need from this forum. I have not used them but an often recommended resource is http://www.dodmerbconsultants.com/. I you suggest you contact them before you get the diagnosis of hernia, because currently it is only a suspected hernia (possibly).
 
Hernias, left untreated, can run into complications or get bigger. Just my guess, but I am thinking they would want it fixed. My DS had been told by a military doc that he got a hernia while on a summer program (OCS). He is due to commission at the end of April. They would not let him commission while the hernia was an issue. Thankfully, he was misdiagnosed and the surgeon I took him to said he did not have a hernia. Your son will need to be able to participate in PT. A hernia may interfere with that.
 
Thank you. Taking him to second doctor this week. I also contacted dodmerbspecialists.com as mentioned and they were very helpful as well.
 
Was the a charge for your consult with dobmerbspecialists?

They were absolutely great. They first listen to your situation to see if they can be of any assistance. I wish we had contacted them a year ago when we started the process. They are very informative and helpful.

Did you use dodmerb consultants (Dr. Merchant) or dodmerb specialists?
 
They recommended we get confirmation of diagnosis and if hernia is confirmed get it fixed so ds can be 100% cleared for physical activity before he leaves.

Great, Sounds like it confirms what we said. Did they give you any odds or advice in seeking a waver to the after surgery waver time requirement
