I read occasionally that some candidates receive notification of appointment after the April 15 deadline for USNA, all the way up to I-Day. The website says all candidates will receive notification of their status by April 15. I'm not sure I understand what that means. How many different statuses are given by the April 15 deadline - TWE, appointment, and what else - a waiting list? I hate to think that a candidate gets a TWE, moves forward with alternate plans and then receives word in May that he has an appointment.

How does all that work?
 
We have friends whose son did not get in to the Naval academy but he is at the airforce academy. I recently asked them, "When did DS get his no?" They said not until June, and I made a crazy face, they then said he received notification that he was on the wait list in April and received his official no in June.
 
Last year, we got wait list notice in April, before the 15th then got official no around the end of May. Wait list is a status

IF there is a wait list this year (in prior years they wasn't always a wait list) AND you are on it, USNA strives to let you know by April 15. The number who get appointments off the wait list depends on how many others turn down their appointments. If you get a TWE, you are no longer in the running for an appointment.
 
TWE last year on June 8. Had been on waitlist. Waitlist notice came by mail. The TWE was actually an email.
 
The TWE this year is a status change to "Turned Down" accompanied by an email. No letter.
 
I know of one local family; the DD was a re-applicant, she got a call from Admissions two days before I-Day; USNA rep said 'I have called You to offer you an Appointment to the USNA. To accept this offer, you must tell me your decision right now, during this phone call.'

She accepted.

My son would take that in a heartbeat as well!
Thanks for the info everyone. Waitlist would be better than a turndown. Just wasn't sure if they left you hanging or specified wait list. That's good to know.
 
As others mentioned in years past, most hear by April 15th. Those who end up in a holding pattern are generally on the wait list. For those who fall into the 'I didn't hear by April 15th' category call your BGO to check in. They can investigate or they will recommend to call admissions. Usually admissions will update why you haven't heard and when you should. It's rare, but happens. The wait list varies by year. Some years no one has come off of it and sometimes dozens. The last few years it has been very few to none.

And yes on the rare occasion something happens and a kid gets a last minute appointment. Doesn't happen every year, but seems to every once in awhile.

That is wonderful! It is important to note that there is no difference between appointment in the fall or in Jun, nor receiving four noms or one nom, other than some "bragging rights", if it is even important to you. Mids have pens in their hands to write their own stories once they are in.
