Hello-
I am a Junior applying for Army ROTC Scholarships this summer/fall, and just had a quick question. Does anybody know if a certain number of the schools you apply for to Cadet Command have to be public institutions? A rep I talked to told me to look it up as he didn't know, but I can't find anything. Thanks!

My DS only listed 5 schools, and 2 had to be public, but not necessarily in his home state. He chose 1 in state and 1 out of state public school, and ranked them 4th and 5th. He received a 4 year Army ROTC scholarship from the 2nd board to his top 2 schools (private) and the in state public school. If you list 7 schools, 3 must be public.

When you can open your application in June, it lists the requirement. Basically 1-3 schools, 1 must be public, 4 or 5, 2 must be public, and 6 or 7, 3 must be public, I am going by memory here but you will be able to verify when your application is availablw.

Here is the actual requirements from the application:

When selecting school choices, the application process requires that 3 of your 7 choices are public colleges or universities. If you select fewer than 6 schools, then 2 of the 5 choices must be public colleges or universities. 3 or fewer choices, 1 must be a public college or university.

Does public also equal 'in state'? Just curious. I know NROTC requires (or did anyway) 1 in-state public.

For us it did not. She had to select one "in state" school and in her case it was a private school (no public schools available for nursing and AROTC scholarships in our state). So her two public schools were actually out of state.

The AROTC app for my son required one of the school choices listed to be an in-state school.

Same with my son.
He originally list 5 SMCs and the got an email that one choice had to be in state.
He got a scholarship for his first choice and the in state.

The application actually would not let her continue without choosing an instate, but in her case it was a private school. I don't know if a private school in state works for everyone or just in her case since there are no state schools in our state that had ROTC nursing as an option.
