Under what circumstances can the Academy rescind an appointment

I received an offer of appointment on October 22nd due to my presidential nomination. The letter said this depended on continued academic success, but what does that mean specifically. I've gotten straight A's (save for one B) throughout high school, but there are a couple AP classes I'm currently taking in which I'm worried I might get a B. If this were to happen, would there be a chance my appointment would be taken back? Do we even have to send in the transcript with our 1st semester grades? I certainly don't plan on slacking off the rest of senior year, I'm just worried there's a chance my gpa might drop a bit. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I have seen very few appointments rescinded - but in the cases I have seen it has been as a result of issues with the law, not just traffic violations but more serious crimes. Stay out of trouble... I have not heard of anyone having an appointment rescinded for grades but I assume if suddenly you failed it's a possibility. I actually know of a few cases where an accident made the candidate no longer medical qualified, hence a medical DQ. I do not think a few B's would be a problem.

I seem to remember my D had to turn in her first semester grades and her final HS grades as well.

A very fine question!

I have seen it done; more than a few times. And it's tragic.

That being said it almost ALWAYS is one of the following:

a. Fail a course in second semester HS (or JC/CC/etc.)
b. DUI/DWI, alcohol/drug arrest, or other arrest/conviction

Those are the two BIG categories that universally are BAD...you don't want to go there. But if you've been pulling "A's" and suddenly classes got tough, sports got tough, etc., and you pulled some "B's" don't worry...just keep plugging along, you'll be fine.

Just do NOT quit...adversity comes all the time; and the SA's will fill you day/night/week/month/year with it. It's how you handle it that shows what you have!

What about a C? I am taking a college pre-calc class and am scared to death of the C+ it seems I am going to get. Would they rescind an offer for a D? I know it says they will for an F, but I am not in danger of failing, just making a C... I've had about 3 B+s and all A's other than that.

The criteria is vague on purpose. This way they can do what they want. If you were a straight A student, got a couple of C's, would you define that as continued academic success? I wouldn't. Your mom wouldn't. Why should the academy? (but the academy will probably accept it)

Why push the limits. You have been getting A's and B's all your life, why take the chance. I understand it is the last half of senior year, but.... Suck it up, study, get help, you know the program. Don't take the risk.

A few C's may be ok
A D may be ok
But, don't do it.

I wouldn't trust a D to be in the ok range

For most kids, a C is tolerable, but no legal troubles would be in anyone's ok range.

I totally agree. The emphasis should be on may. One D MAY be ok. IMHO as good as these kids are they would have to work (or total lack of work) hard to attempt to get a D. They could probably sleep through most classes and get a C. With their motivation and drive there is no good excuse for them not to "continue their academic success".

Continue to make mom and dad proud.

For many of those kids, earning (and I emphasize earning) a C would be 100% against their grain. They'd do the work to be "above average" at least.

I do not think a "D" would raise any flags. Nor do I think the academy would pull an appointment for C's and a D or two after the offer. If the academy were to pull such an offer there would be more to it. Borderline grades to begin with, poor CFA, or another reason they'd deem necessary. They know (and expect) that some will fail at the academy. I'm not sure an "F" would draw much attention without additional reasons to doubt ones probability of success.

Just my opinion.

I guess I'm just confused on why, after all the years spent seeking an appointment, we are talking about how close someone can get to a bare minimum without having an appointment rescinded? IMAO the appointees who will go on and see further success at USAFA will never place themselves in a situation where their appointment could be at risk. Even if someone does "let off the gas" after an appointment is extended I do not believe that person would honestly let themselves slip anywhere near the border if they where truly serious about the Academy. Please don't get me wrong, go out and have fun, make memories with your family and friends, by all means enjoy your time prior to basic training, but that's by no means an endorsement to see how far you can push the envelope. The opportunity to attend a SA is rare, stop thinking about how bad you can be.

I think some are making inappropriate assumptions here or are not reading the posts clearly. I don't think anyone here is trying to push the envelope or letting off the gas. At least one of the posters is having difficulty with a college level course. That's reasonable. I agree help should be sought but I don't think we need to accuse them of shooting for the bare minimums.

Thank you! This is a higher level math class, at the college level. As a high school senior I am also doing sports and working two part time jobs. Math is not my best subject, and was just wondering if a C- or something would make them rescind an appointment. I am in my teacher's office during her office hours at every opportunity.

You are both right. My bad. However, I do stand by my advice for those entering the "senioritis" stages.

Just a thought for all the HS Juniors out there. Meet with your guidance counselor & tell them that you NEED the best Calc. teacher for your senior year. Have the counselor build your entire academic schedule around that teacher's class. Plan on attending extra help... Maybe meet with her on your lunch period, or when she (and you know it will be a woman!) has an open period. You will be very happy that you did when you get to USAFA. (This worked for my DD.);)

Yeah they will probably pull it. Hell I had a 99 in Ap calc ab and Ap calc bc. Also a 100 in ap physics 1 and 2 and I didn't even get in. So I would say that if you are getting below a B then you don't deserve to even go there.

I will differ with you there. Everyone who gets in deserves it, but not everyone who deserves it gets in. Obviously do the best you can, but referencing this post:
They get your final transcripts, a C will make them roll their eyes, a D will raise serious eyebrows, and an F will start paperwork. Just keep the same grades as you got in with and youre golden
