Hello,

I just checked my usmma portal and my status reads "hold". Can anyone tell me exactly what that means and... Realistically... Are my chances of getting in good or no? I am from AK, and no of a friend that has already gotten in. thanks!

From reading these posts, it is most likely that you are on national waiting list. How many are slated from your state? Some states have only one. We are in Texas and there are 13. But some other states may have spots they don't fill...as well as some people turning down appointments. I know this doesn't give much help, but hang in there. It doesn't mean no....yet. Good luck!

We also switched to HOLD a couple of weeks ago and the form letter came in the mail soon after. DS emailed his counselor about what exactly being on HOLD meant and this was the response:

The USMMA is required (by law) to offer admission to applicants based on their ranked order-of-merit by State. As candidate files are evaluated, some (whose overall standing is VERY high) are offered admission early-on … the majority, however, are placed in a “hold” status. Those candidates then wait until all applications are evaluated and rank-ordered. In the beginning of April when we have all completed files reviewed and sequenced, we make offers to fill the State quotas and then move to the National Waiting list.

I think it is pretty much standard procedure and in the next few weeks they will start filling the State slots. For example, our State is allowed "4" per year. The top "4" will receive an appointment and the remaining will go on the NWL and be ranked nationally from that point. We are still hopeful! Do you know how many your state (AK) is allowed?

I found this on an OLD thread.....assuming there have been no changes??? Hope this helps!

Unfortunately AK is only allowed 1, and i know the guy who got it. Is there any way I still get in or no?

Yes, from what I understand, once all the state allotments are done if there are states that did not use their allotments those will be used to fill the rest of the class from the national wait list. Maybe others who are more experienced in this can weigh in. But from what I have been told that is how it works. You have every reason to still have hope!

There were 2 from AK last year (maybe 3 but 2 for sure). It all depends on the strength of you application. If that one person accepts, then state is not a factor. No one can chance you except an admissions officer. Send me PM for more info.

If you've looked at the class breakdowns from year to year, you'll notice a trend. All of the people that finish and fully qualify, are about double the amount of available appointments if I recall correctly. About 50% chance of I'm correct.
