Hi All
My DS just got off the phone with the academy. They are offering him a guaranteed admission to Class of 2021 but he has to go through foundation year. He already has a 4 year scholarship for NROTC. Which is better? My DS is very excited about the offer.

Can some one please explain what this means and what are foundation colleges? We are in NY.

I am still trying to search this forum for more info.

Thanks for your help and advise.

Lots of threads on this topic regarding foundation schools hopefully they shed some light.

If USNA is where he wants to go, Foundation is a great option. Foundation grads have the highest success rates of all entry sources into USNA. There is a specific list of schools that partner with the Foundation program you can pick from (its between 15-20 schools if I remember right). Some are military, some are not. Its best to explore which ones meet your DS goal and vision the best. The thing they all have in common is they are known partners to USNA who prep kids to succeed at USNA, work with them to reapply, work with them to complete Noms. The Foundation Program will provide a list of schools and financial support. All in all its a wonderful program that I would highly advise to anyone who wants to attend USNA. Hopefully after some research you have some specific questions we can help answer.

Between NROTC or Foundation... neither is better. Which one is right for your DS? For your family economically? If he really wants USNA, he now has a path. Sure it takes an extra year. In the long run, not a huge issue.

Thanks NavyHoops. Can he ask USNA if he can go on a waitlist for this year, in addition to the Foundation offer? What is the difference between Foundation and NAPS?
Thanks.

Foundation is a great route to USNA as NavyHoops stated. My DS did a foundation year and I feel it made a huge difference. The stats on the success of Foundation kids at the Academy are very strong. We are also from NY . Happy to answer any questions you may have.

Hi NF 01
Thanks. Where did your DS go to for foundation? Did he have to re take ACT/SAT? Did he have to reapply to USNA? Did he have to go through MOC appointment again?
What did he think about the year?
Thanks for your help.

No he cannot go on the Waitlist for the year. That isn't how USNA works. He can either accept the offer and then will have to reapply for next year. Obviously as a reapplicant certain things do not have to be redone. But he will have to retake the CFA. The schools will ensure he updates he application and nomination data. NAPS is the USNA Prep School. It is slightly different in that candidates are in a military environment, sworn into the USN Reserves and live that sort of 24/7 military environment. Part of each NAPS class includes those coming from the fleet also. Yes some of the prep schools are military based, but different in the fact they are not in the USN. Foundation are private schools that USNA partners with. Yes he will retake the ACT/SAT while in Foundation.

nodiva is well versed, IMHO on the Foundation offer, it is as Hoops states , almost a Golden Ticket (in another post) Most NROTC scholarships do not cover Room & Board.

He went to a prep school in CT. There are a number to choose from in the tri state area. He did not have to retake the SAT's. Yes he has to reapply to USNA but the Foundation team will explain how that works. Yes he had to go through the nomination process again but they were informed of the foundation scholarship so he received a Nom from the same Congressman. Although my DS would have preferred to go right in after High School he felt the foundation program had a number of advantages.
You take all your plebe classes in Prep School so it makes a stressful Plebe Year a bit easier and lets you start with a strong GPA. It gets them past the home sickness of living away before Plebe Year and teaches them what it is like to live on their own . My DS is about to graduate in the top 100 academically and I think the Foundation Program had a lot to do with that. The Prep School teach you to budget your time which is very important at USNA.
And Roger Staubach went through the Foundation program. If it was good enough for him it worked for us.......

NF 01.
Do you mind telling which school in CT?

And thanks to all the above posts.

Hi Informe, DS was a Foundation sponsored prep and is now a plebe. Information about the prep schools can be found on the USNA Alumni Association and Foundation website at USNA.com. The prep schools are listed under "Our Programs" under the "Athletics and Scholarships" tab. I believe there are links to the prep school websites as well.

We were in the same position last year. DD was offered a Foundation Sponsorship in FEB. With lots of other opportunities (athletic D3 darling), we were initially confused with this Foundations offer. We pored over all of the information we could get. The Foundations office WAS FABULOUS. Within 24 hours she decided it was the right move for her. Within a week the deal was done. She picked a prep school where she could participate in her sport and improve her chances of making the team at USNA. Everything was done by March 1. The hardest part of the process was contacting the colleges that had really pursued her and letting them know that she was going a different direction.
The year has flown by and DD considers it the best decision she's ever made. She will always be grateful for this "PG" (post grad) year. It is a little tricky to explain to people during the hyped up high school graduation season. We sent out announcements saying "DD is the recipient of a USNA Foundations sponsorship. Next year she will attend _____ and plans to enter the Naval Academy for the class of 2020". Most people will think you are talking about NAPS. Oh well.
Here's my advice. Quickly review school options. Narrow down to 3 schools and CONTACT these schools, look over their websites, AND CHOOSE A SCHOOL QUICKLY. The most sought after preps fill up fast. We have never looked back and will always be grateful for this "gap" year. Best of luck![/QUOTE]

I wrote this to another family a few weeks back. Nothing has changed but you are a little later in the process. Capt. Wallace and the staff at Foundations are INVALUABLE. We are grateful every day for this extra year. Our DD chose a school far away from home on purpose. I will private message you.

Thanks to nodiva, murfthesurf and THS.

THS where did your son go to for his foundation year?
Thanks.

My DS received a Foundation offer in late Nov! We were confused also! I emailed Capt. Wallace and he immediately called me and explained it all. We felt so much better after the call! My DS was thrilled. After that, he received an appt. to the USCGA! Now he had a decision to make. He has decided on the Foundation route and choose Kiski as his Prep. They then got is all finalized quickly. You do pay for your portion so you must look at the schools and the cost. We choose Kiski due to Capt. Wallaces' recommendation, they offer his sports of choice, and its only 4 hours away. It is an all boys school so may not be for everyone, but our DS thought it would be good to not have other "distractions!" LOL. I have heard great things about the school and the Foundation in general. Will not need to retake the ACT nor reapply, just need to get another nomination again, and will take the PFE which is a little different than the CFA. The PFE is what the Mids have to take. Feel free to PM me with questions! Looks like they will both be class of 2021!

Would you mind expand on Kiski, DS also on Foundation and Capt. Wallace was able to offer a close to full ride for the private prep boarding school.

We have not visited Kiski yet, but after looking some schools over, DS went with Kiski: http://www.kiski.org/Page/Admission/US-Naval-Academy-Prep-Program. It is all boys, so he felt there would be less distraction, lol! They also offered his preferred sports. It is pricey but the school does offer Foundation kids a discounted rate. Even with the discount, our portion was quite a bit but small price to pay considering what DS will get the next 4 years after Kiski. Bob Ellis is who you speak with from Kiski and he was quite thorough in his Skype Interview. We hope to attend the April 30 open house!

Neither is better I don't think. Personally, if his ultimate goal is to become a Navy Officer, Foundations will be putting him a year behind.

While researching the Foundation school path I have see references to the Foundation sponsoring a candidate who attends a regular college for the Foundation year and not the PG schools listed on the Foundation site. Is this program still in existence or has it been phased out? If it is existence, what colleges qualify?
