i have had a concern with obtaining an aviation slot while at the CGA. how many are usually avail directly to flight school? what would be the best way to secure one of these slots?

this question may be a little off the wall but do CG aviators ever engage in combat and or fight anything?

since CG aviators are trained at NAS pensicola as are navy and marine corps pilots, would i able to transition to a bigger aircraft inventory through as transfer to the marines or navy if i chose to do so after flying for several years in the CG?

1. About 10-ish aviation spots have been available in the past, that that MAY change to ZERO!

2. Do well, do very well, and don't do anything to your eyes.

3. Yes, CG uses the Flight School at P-cola. I have never heard of CG switching to a DoD branch in aviation (or anything else).

4. No so much direct combat, but they do engage in airborne use of force, aka stopping non-compliant vessels. It's called HITRON (Helicopter Interdiction Squadron).

HITRON is out of business... they're taking the concept to the HH-65C Dolphins and having those be the drug runners.. the most "combat they do IS the drug running but other than that the CG is a Homeland Security branch, not Department of Defense... I can't answer for the number of flight slots, it changes every year, i do know that CG aviators are being delayed in flight school because they have no where to send them.. the new HH-144's are replacing the old HU-25 falcons but they have no simulators for the 144's yet... its a big mess.. point is... number one in the class gets first pick, thats your best bet..

Drug running is illegal, what the Coast Guard does is drug interdiction. As the HH-65s are refitted, they are called MH-65s......also, drug interdiction is not the only place that airborne use of force exists, take a look out the Metro window in DC as you go past Reagan National Airport. USCG falls under the DEPARTMENT of Homeland Security, although it does maintain cutters in the Persian Gulf (who people are big fans of according to a Aussie naval officer I know). The Ocean Sentry's are already flying missions, as are the Falcons.

The rumors are in the next few years, CGA grads will all be sent back to see for their first tour, as was done prior to the class of 2004 graduation.

You're right about the drug running, i just didn't know what to call it... The Ocean Sentry's aren't operational yet though... still in the testing phase although they will be rerouted to SAR cases and stand duty two nights a week as of now... over the next 10 years they will be replacing every falcon with the new 144 from spain..

I can tell you with 100% certainty that the Ocean Sentry's are currently being used, and that one was involved in the SAR case involving the two NFL players.

i totally agree... im just saying that they arent fully "operational" just yet...

Packer, are you a pilot? You seem to know a good bit about a little known CG aircraft.

My dad is the Branch Chief of the HC-144A Ocean Sentry "Casa" Airframe at ATC Mobile, AL and is the one holding the water bottle in the middle of the picture.. that was the first duty stood by the airframe which they now stand two nights a week (thurs and fri).. by next year they'll be standing duty 24/7

i've known about the casa since 2004... and i see it practically every day now...

Outstanding...the branch chief at ATC Mobile? Not the program chief at CGHQ? That is very cool. I thought it started sounding pretty specific. The brief for the response to one of those cases rolled through a cubicle next to mine here in DC. Needless to say, people were pretty excited to hear about the 144 seeing some action. Are you looking at CGA or the USCG?

probably CGA for now... i've been around the coast guard all of my life... but would never enlist... and i wasn't trying to belittle you or anything.. i was just sayin that i know the good and bad with the 144.. other than that... pshh you got me

Right, we can call it a draw. I say they've been on operational missions, you say that are not standing fully operational watches. That seems like a happy medium.

AL can't be a terrible place to apply to CGA from. Your dad an academy grad? If he is, what year?

Packer, I dub thee, CG Aviation expert for the purpose of Service Academy Forums. You know more than I do about a good deal of that stuff. I can tell you what flight quarters is like on a ship, but you're close enough to a pretty good source for a prospective CG pilot. :thumb:

well.. if anyone had any inside questions... i could GET answers... i have connections in flight school, the enlisted side, and the officer side of air stations and airframes.... if it werent for my connections, i'd be nothing lol

Haha, I've been dealing with ATC Mobile recently, a guy I know down there had a request.

I had a good time in Mobile as a cadet.
