MOC Nominations Denial Due to Having Presidential and/or JROTC Nominations

I am curious. Has any candidate ever experienced verbal advice during MOC interviews to not expect specific MO nominations due to already seeking or obtaining other nominations, even with an impressive application package? My DS did.

It's somewhat common in competitive states and districts. The MOCs there try not to give a second nomination so they can have as many people receive nominations as possible.

We're in No VA- very competitive area. DS found out that he was denied appointment to USNA due solely to slating issue. They're limited to the number of ROTC and Presidential noms they can select even though the board has found him qualified. I hate to think that that MOC nomination was offered to someone who was unqualified and not offered appointment.

I'm not sure it is common for a MOC to say since you have a Presidential nom and/or a Junior ROTC nom don't expect a congressional nom. I know it does happen and that is very frustrating. Makes me think they haven't taken the time to understand how the system works. It is common for the MOCs in a competitive state or area to coordinate so they don't duplicate noms amongs't themselves. Works that way (or at least it has in the past) here in Northern Virginia, but to say don't expect to get a MOC nom because you already have a Presidential or JROTC nom IMHO is unsatisfactory.

1mom -- so did your DS get a congressional nom from someone? From your post above where you mention a "slating issue" makes me think your DS did get a congressional nom?

It is very frustrating for any eager and high achieving 17 yr old to be told such a thing during one of the most important interviews of his life such negative info. I agree- it is totally unsatisfactory, to say the least.
He did not receive any MOC nom. He also applied for a VP nom, but heard nothing. A fellow Marine friend (USNA alumni) mentioned that MOC staffs/offices should let this happen and should award nomination to the most deserving candidates, period. In the appointment thread, there are few to none of appointments with just ROTC/Presidential noms without also having MOC noms.

1mom -- very sorry to hear. Seems like competition for USNA is very difficult this year, especially for those here in NOVA. Thank you for your (and/or your spouse's) service that allowed for your DS's Presidential nom and congrats to your DS for earning the NJROTC nom. What is the "Plan B" if you don't mind me asking? NROTC? SMC? other school?

Sincere best wishes.

"Unique life experience" is what they're looking for in candidates profiles nowadays at least with USNA. DS is awaiting decisions from USAFA and USMA. His Plan B is ROTC (just accepted to VT for engineering) and is awaiting ROTC scholarship decision.
Thank you for your service as well. I am a military wife. My husband is a 28 yrs O-6 Marine. My son is eager receive his training and to serve as a commissioned officer.

Did your DS get a TWE from USNA? If not then he is still in the running, even without the MOC nom. Rest assured that the MOC did not nominate someone who was unqualified.

My DS did indeed receive the :( TWE:( via email earlier this week. I meant to say "less qualified" in my previous post.

The presidential nom category is limited to 100. There are about 800 or so presidential noms each year, so the competitiveness of that category is very high. Some MOCs will consider whether the candidate already has a nom from another source - including presidential. I'm fairly certain the senators in Maryland do this (as well as coordinate between one another not to double nom). My DD (with a presidential to Navy) got a nom from one senator and also from her congressman for USMMA (there are no presidential noms to USMMA). With no congressional nom and only the presidential, she's still waiting to hear from USNA. Despite that, she already has an appointment to USMMA and will probably accept.

In my interview for a senatorial nomination, I said I had a JROTC nom, and the man told me not to expect to get the senatorial no because of that. I ended up getting the senatorial nom anyway...

My son had an LOA and a Presidential nomination going into his first MOC interview in November of his senior year. USNA strongly encourages candidates to compete for every nom but he was told flat-out at that interview not to expect a nomination from them because he didn't need one. Very competitive district in PA.

hthp, did your DS complete everything, including medical, when he received his LOA?

Yes, all was complete. LOA was pending dodmerb approval. I think he received his appointment a week or 2 after that moc interview.

I am sure to receive the offer of appointment a week or two after being told "no" like that was a huge relief. Congrats to your DS!
