I hate to ask this because it is a "chance me" type of question...anyways:

Does having a LOA affect your chance of receiving a Medical Waiver?

Sorry again for asking a chance question. Thank you for any help.

DS had an LOA and was medically disqualified after his physical. We were told by another SA parent to promptly take him to a specialist, get retested, and resubmit the results to DODMERB. We did that and today he is a 2C. I don't know whether the LOA made a difference or not...

Same as above for my 3/c mids roommate.-LOA, Medically DQ'd, then appointed after pursuing waiver. Good luck to you.

I may be wrong but I think you stated last time you were considered underweight for your height?? If this is the issue is there any specialist you can see? My son was considered overweight for his height and had to do body mass index by physician? Assuming this is the problem... why would being underweight an issue if Doctor finds you healthy?

I think an LOA indicates the SA wants you, thus they are willing to put you forward for the waiver review. That does not happen for everyone that needs a waiver.

As far as getting the waiver, an LOA may have some influence but it would depend greatly on what the specific condition was, and its circumstances.

If this was a USAFA thread, I would say that the LOA would have no impact. At USAFA, the waiver authority is the USAFA Surgeon General. The docs decide. No appeal. Have direct experience where DS was wanted by USAFA admissions badly but docs would not grant waiver. (DS did get waiver from US Army Cadet Command for his 4YR AROTC scholarship.)

At USNA and USMA, the waiver authority is the Superintendent. It is my understanding that the doctors "advise" the admissions committee/waiver authority there, hence there may be some influence by an LOA, but again, I would expect that the specific conditions and circumstances of the medical condition would greatly matter.

I was DQd for a case of bronchitis I had two years ago which required me to use an inhaler for less than two weeks. It is not a problem now - I am in great respiratory health, I am one of the top distance runners in my school and have been for two years now, I had very good CFA results in regards to physical stamina (71 Push ups, 89 Sit ups, 5:24 mile run). Will they factor this in for my waiver, on top of the fact that I have had no reoccurrance of a respiratory problem, which is also documented?

My son received a 4 year NROTC scholarship (still waiting on USNA decision) to his top choice college after the first board in September. He was DQ'd for a knee problem he had when he was twelve (D226.40 Current or history of osteochondral defect, formerly known as osteochondritis dissecans). NROTC initiated the waiver. They asked for all his medical information from the time of his injury. We sent in everything they asked for and he received an NROTC waiver fairly quickly. He too is a runner (sprinter actually) and had great CFA scores. I know they did not take that into account. All they look for is the medical back up saying you are clear. Hope this helps.

The SAs will only pursue a waiver if you are otherwise deemed qualified. The LOA is indicative that USNA thinks highly of your application

I have no idea if your medical issue is waiverable or not, but if this was a remedial - your ability to return to an active lifestyle would be deemed a positive
