CGAS - MMI or GMC?

My DS has accepted the conditional appointment to be a CGAS. However there is something I've noticed on this forum regarding the two institutions USCGA uses for this program. There seems to be a substantial amount of comments about MMI but not many for GMC. Is one more popular than the other? If so why?

Another question regards athletics. My DS is a football player and his initial thought is to hope for GMC because it has a football program. However I know this CGAS deal is all about academics. Part of me hopes he goes to MMI simply for the sake of preserving his body for four years of football at USGCA and of course having nothing else to worry about other than academics at MMI.

If anyone has a DS or DD who played a sport at MMI or GMC and is now at USCGA I'd love to hear your perspective on the issue of playing the sport while at Prep school. Were there any regrets in comparison with classmates who just focused on academics?

Finally, are there any lessons learned out there about the MMI or GMC experience from your DD or DS? Thanks.
 
You might want to talk with the CGA Football coaches. My DS is a recruited football player for KP and his coaches didn't want him doing anything, outside of intermurals, because they have no oversight into the training/conditions/etc of that prep program. They want your son to be ready to play for them, not the prep school. Plus, if he plays at the prep school, how does that affect his "4 years" of NCAA eligibility? My DS went to MMI and it's been great. He was able to focus on academics and adjusting to the regimental lifestyle without the pressure of football. He's played football since he was 7 years old, so, as a dad, I'm glad he had a year off for his body to heal. Just a few things to think about. Good luck.

Congrats. My DS just got his conditional appointment to Prep School also. We are every excited. My son wrestles as well as plays football but I have heard that most cadets that go to prep try and focus on academics and take the year off from sports. @Physicsguru could probably tell us more because he is associated with MMI. Most of the CGAS appointees go to MMI, probably why more comments. I think the ratio is about 75% to MMI and 25% to GMC. I would be interested to know what criteria the CGA uses to choose which school they attend. We are from Georgia and I would be very excited if mine actually stated in the state another year.

MaggieMae66, Congrats to you as well. I can certainly understand taking the year off from sports. It makes a great deal of sense. Yes, I'd like to know the criteria the CGA chooses to place CGASs as well. Good luck to your DS and thank you.
 
I have a DD currently at GMC. She is one of 15 CGAS hoping for a May 6th appointment to the USCGA. Her plan is to sail at CGA and in Millidgeville (or as the Cadets call it, "Millie") there isn't any sailing. Some of the cadets did participate in sports (track and soccer), it seemed that the cadets slated to play football at CGA sat out the year (football is pretty big at GMC, 30 players have gone on to the NFL since 1995). The academic portion of CGAS is pretty demanding (I believe 8 of the 15 Cadets failed calc 1 and are currently retaking it, mine is one of them). All in all, GMC has been a great experience for my DD and it has her looking forward to the next step. Fingers crossed :)

First of all good luck to your DD for the best news on May 6th! This is valuable information about priorities regarding the program. Our DS is taking careful note of what's being shared on this forum. Thank you for passing this on about GMC. I have seen it written many times...parents get as excited, if not more so, than their DD/DS! I am guilty of it.:)
