Even though I got the AROTC scholarship, can I use the FAFSA money? It says you can't use any other scholarships with it... What does that mean

Yes, you can. AROTC pays their tuition and our sons' merit money scholarships pay room/board. Others use FAFSA money (loans or grants) to make up short falls.

My son's school granted housing at no cost due to AROTC.
Once he contracted the AROTC scholarship was paid to the school and the awarded merit funds were taken back by the school. He was still able to use the subsidized and un subsidized student loan of about 5500 to use towards the meal plan. The financial aid office at your school choice should be able to guide you.

Just to add we did accept the fafsa award and the merit money which essentially covered him for the school year should he not have contracted for some reason (injury, illness etc) despite having the AROTC four year offer-again the financial aid office was super helpful. Best wishes!

Great to hear! What school?

Some schools take back merit funds when ROTC awards scholarships, some do not. That's one of the things we love about Alabama. They allow stacking: merit, ROTC, department, etc.

Agreed. A quick call to my sons school with notice of the AROTC scholarship and they covered everything the AROTC scholarship wasn't with all of the academic scholarship money they had already slotted for him. I received a new financial aid award letter with a new dollar aid amount called AROTC scholarship winner award.

DS' merit scholarship was for tuition only :(. Room and board ran 12-15k nearly twice my tuition from years ago...

Wish that were the case everywhere-we took parent plus with finacial aid to pay the bill prior to contract. Financial aid was super helpful, but it would have been easier if things worked like Alabama does things.
