First ACT Scores

I just received my first ACT scores. Mind the fact that I didnt really study.

Composite:27
English:32
Reading:28
Math:22
Science:25
Writing:12 (at that point I was drained and knew it wouldnt really be looked at)

Any feedback?

If what your asking is if these scores are a good starting point, it would be highly variable. Your English and reading scores fit into the standards I believe, but you will need to work on your Math and science a little bit. I'm sure with some effort you can easily clear the score requirements.
 
Remember, USAFA (and other SAs) superscore - they take the highest individual section score from all your tests you submit. USAFA also did not require writing scores. It's still a good idea to take with writing, as other SAs and colleges require that sometimes.

I'm assuming from your username you are a 2022 applicant? If so, sign up for and take the ACT as many times as practical/affordable. It helps to be familiar with it inside and out. Then submit the best scores.
 
Our DSs ALO suggested he get at least a 30 in each section. He ended up taking it four times total starting in 10th grade. With the superscoring he had 33,32,32,31 on the subjects but his best composite was a 30. Take the test and keep taking it.
 
First realize that USMA, can't remember about the others, will not count your scores till you do the writing test. So don't let that go too long. Summer Seminar may be the exception?

Just taking the test over and over doesn't help all that much. In our families experiences, If you are not one of those Awesomely brilliant folks of which we have so many applying to the academies, you have to use the tricks, and tips. Before you get burned out by multiple tests.

Get Prep info, and Practice books and try to get classes either through school or Private depending on your budget. ( I was told by my son's Calculus teacher that, Getting into higher level maths doesn't help much, as most of the questions do not go much past algebra). There is a lot of free or Cheap stuff out there.

Little things can make a big difference. For example...I will try to explain this right.....My Daughter was telling me about it.

When you are solving for a math problem and you have 3 answers available Solve for the Middle answer first. If it is right you have your answer if it is low you know it is NOT the lower answer, so you know it is the higher answer by default.
As opposed to starting with the lowest number and if it is wrong you still have 2 higher answers that might be right so more time spent solving on that problem.

Sleeping through parts of the exam helps when super scoring, also although I know some of you would frown on this, in some way you feel it is cheating? If the Academies are only interested in a couple area's why tire yourself out with the ones they are not interested in. I would call it good tactics, The redcoats thought the American Patriots were "Cheating" shooting at them from behind cover.

Caveat: DS that did not get accepted messed up a roll on a good composite score when he didn't finish in one subject, came back to bite him on Plan B. Of course many civilian schools are moving to Super score now.

I could understand that logic, from knowledge in English you should be able to apply it towards reading. The same goes from knowing math to apply a bit of it towards science, even though I find the science portion to be more of tedious graph staring with some thought into it.
 
I believe in order for your candidate admission portal to fully open at USAFA you need to achieve at least a 26 in each area. Those areas that you fell below 26 need work. It is worth it to prepare and with acceptance of super scoring, they will take your highest score in each area and create your composite. Good Luck

I think the reason is more fundamental than that. They just think math and English are the two subjects you need to have a great understanding of to be successful at the academy. If you struggle in math ,or come in with a limited background in math, you will struggle to get through since the academies are stem schools. USNA only accepts math and English scores from the ACT, and disregards completely the other two scores. USAFA considers them all, but not all equally.
 
You would think English and reading are the same, but My son got a 33 in English and 25 in Reading. Go figure, glad they are more interested in the English score.
 
My son hated reading the most on the ACT. Never felt he did well and usually didn't. Lol. Always felt he did well on English and did great on practice tests, but struggled to get score over 30. The superscore format at the academies is great though. He never got over a 31 composite, but was able to post subscores of m34, e31, s34, and r30. He felt like he got lucky with science and reading, and little unlucky in English. Math was about what he expected. In the end, taking the test three or four times, if not more, is very beneficial.
