Can anybody give me any insight on the NROTC program at Rensselaer? I am still waiting to hear back from NROTC but am trying to get my thoughts in order as it is coming down to crunch time.

Google knows all! They have a great website including issues of their newspaper which are well worth a read to gat a sense of the unit.

I have tried that Kinnem. Those provided some good information, but I meant more from a standpoint of the unit itself. Size, time commitment/drills, etc. I will keep going with those things you said, though. Thanks!

Nothing a call to the unit wouldn't answer. I bet the freshman adviser could answer those.

My son is in his first year with RPI's NROTC. He absolutely loves it. Loves the size of the unit (less than 30 per class.)

DS and I will be at RPI's admitted student day this weekend. He will be meeting with the battalion and I will report back.

Hi 5Day, Thanks in advance and would appreciate also if you could find out the date of the NROTC Orientation week and if they are allowed to have an early move-in to their residence hall for their O-Week. What I heard was they usually conduct their O-Week 2 - 3 weeks before the class starts and not sure how the move-in works for freshman ROTC since move-in will not start a week before the class. I called RPI's NROTC but was told that they'll finalize it at the end of this week.

@PenoyBalut I have the same question, since "normal" freshman arrive 1 week prior to class for the freshman experience, I am assuming NROTC Orientation is the week before that. So, does all that college stuff go with DS when he arrives for NROTC Orientation or do I need to drive up the next week to drop everything off? I will try to find out.

DS had his "O' week at RPI the week before the freshman orientation week started. He was able to bring along much of what was going to eventually end up in his dorm room, and many of the returning NROTC students were there to help get those items stored in the basement at the armory (where the NROTC unit is housed). We did end up taking another carload of "stuff" (mini-fridge) etc. He did report that there is a long standing tradition at RPI that fraternity brothers around campus help with getting freshman move all of their "stuff" into their dorm rooms.

@bucketheadsdad Where do they live during O week?
He was in his own dorm room, but it was devoid of anything but what was listed on the "bring it for O week" list.

On a side note, once everything was finalized, DS began networking with other incoming NROTC freshman on FB and other forms of social media. Several of them were in contact with one another for several months before "meeting" for the first time. DS and his roommate, who are from VERY different backgrounds, one urban, one small town, and they hit it off so well that they've already made their rooming arrangements for next year.
