USNA and USAFA had the exact same numbers?!?!

Thanks for being the Numbers Guy-pretty interesting to watch!

Key Points -

2017 - 1,408 vs. 1,200
2019 - 1,394 vs. 1,211

USMA look at Qualified vs. Admitted
2019
- 2,299 vs. 1,262
2018 - 2,424 vs. 1,223
2017 - 2,165 vs. 1,190
2019 - 2,629 vs. 1,193

Interesting stats.

So do we know how many offers of Admissions/Appointment the USMA make?

@murfthesurf you should be reporting yield, not %declined. Yield is more universal ;)

I would bet that a good chunk of those that declined their offer to one SA are going to a different SA.

The SA yields are enviable. Compare that to some other highly competitive schools:
USNA is at about 85%
USAFA is about 80%
This is for the class of 2018
School Admit Rate Yield Rate
Bowdoin College 14.8% 50.5%
Brown University 8.6% 59.9%
Dartmouth College 11.5% 54.5%
Georgetown University 16.6% 46%
Harvard University 5.9% 82%
Princeton University 7.28% 69.2%
Stanford University 5.07% 78.9%
University of Pennsylvania 9.9% 66%
Williams College 18.2% 45.7%
Yale University 6.26% 71.7%

That metric reflects well on both the focused commitment of the applicants and the selection acumen of the SA admissions folks.
The "cachet" private colleges receive applications from anyone with $50 and a dream, plus, many highly qualified students will apply en masse to them, knowing how fickle their admissions decisions can be.

Murf, thanks. I started to do these based on a thread last week but got frustrated and stopped because they each report differently so it was hard to do an apples to apples comparison (USMA just had to be different ;)). Thanks!

2017 - (81) or 6.70 % of Class are the Kids of USNA Alumni
2016 - (56) or 4.62 % of Class are the Kids of USNA Alumni

USAFA
2019 - (83) or 6.76 % of Class are the Kids of USAFA Alumni
2018 - (74) or 6.22 % of Class are the Kids of USAFA Alumni
2017 - (85) or 7.27 % of Class are the Kids of USAFA Alumni
2016 - (67) or 6.67 % of Class are the Kids of USAFA Alumni

I wonder why that number is so low. Is it because there is little if no "bump" for the legacy or if it is because so few apply?

That stat doesn't agree with what Bruce has to say about the SA.

Thanks for the stats. I have appreciated all of your input, feedback, and knowledge regarding the entire process. How do your USNA numbers reconcile to the yield that I understand to be +90%? I guess this is within the margin of error since it is a very small sample size of 1373 with a 13.25% decline rate in 2019.

They are not really related. Yield is just saying how many accepted vs those admitted. This new statistic is just showing how few of the students at the SA are children of SA alumni (Legacy). @murfthesurf is crunching through the SA class profiles.

What USAFA also does is break out the number of kids who's Parents are Alumni of each Service Academy (Not just USAFA), this brings the percentage up to a steady ~8.4% to 9.5% of the total USA Appointed enrollment for each year.

USNA does not state other Alumni, only USNA

Of course, West Point...whelp... they don't even do it...

I wonder why that number is so low. Is it because there is little if no "bump" for the legacy or if it is because so few apply?

Great question.

I can't prove it but I suspect 3 reasons:

1. Some legacy kids see the sacrifice mom or dad or mom and dad go through, or they the kid go through and have no desire to continue with that.

2. Some legacy kids want to serve and go to the SA, but due to the geographic factor find themselves competing against large numbers of kids like themselves within very competitive districts because they are all living around each other which can limit their chances (think Northern Virginia, Maryland, Norfolk, VA., etc where there are mega concentrations of military families with high school age kids.). Anecdotal -- VA Cong district 11 in 2010 sent 19 kids to USMA and in 2011, sent 23 kids to USMA. The VA district MOC can nominate 10, so USMA went deep and beyond his list. After 2011, things changed, but it wasn't a change in the quality of the candidate.

3. Some legacy kids have things documented in their military dependent medical record that makes DoDMERB a challenge to get through.

Again, I can't prove it -- just my speculation based on our experience.

According to a chart contained in the 2012 Annual Report to the Board of Visitors (available online), the yield for the USMA Class of 2016 was 88.5% or 11.5% (using Murf's method). 2016 is the only class that is available in the report, but it suggests the yield is generally consistent across the academies.

Found a Summary Profile of the USMMA Class of 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015

A USMMA look at Offered Appointment vs. Reported on I-Day:

2019 - 361 vs. 255 = 106 declined or 29.36 % declined an Appointment
2018 - 378 vs. 252* = 126 declined or 33.33 % declined an Appointment
2017 - 354 vs. 237 = 117 declined or 33.05 % declined an Appointment
2016 - 409 vs. 273* = 136 declined or 33.25 % declined an Appointment
2015 - 412 vs. 285* = 127 declined or 30.82 % declined an Appointment
* number includes International Students

What is really odd (as seen in pdf file) are the number kids who started Applications averaged 2,189 per year. However, in 2019 the number kids who started Applications dropped 527! or 24.07 % in one Year!

This huge drop off can not be explained by the numbers USMMA has published. For example ratio of the number of USMMA Inquires to number of USMMA Applications started is:

2019 - 21%
2018 - 24%
2017 - 22%
2016 - 23%
2015 - 28%

In addition, ratio of USMMA Application Starts/USMMA Application In-completes has been steady at about 61-62% for the last 5 years. Thus, one can rule out a notion that the Application process has been made harder for 2019 vs. the previous (4) years).

Something has caused the number of Applications starts to drop 24% in one year.

This 24% drop in Applications mystery should probably be posted over at the USMMA?

There is probably some scientific explanation for the steep drop. Those who were 17/18 last year do not particularly like spending the fourth year mainly at sea? The career options at graduation are too limited? Did USCGA get an unusual boost for class of '19? Maybe Search and Rescue and Defending the Border were getting more interest from the young people?

Speaking of USCGA, where is the data, Murf? ;)
