HS Graduation Gift Ideas for incoming Appointee

To be perfectly honest, they can't really take much of anything with them to the academy. You will be told what to bring when you get the logging in book. For the most part, they will not be able to wear civies off academy grounds, unless they get a sponsor family, which I highly recommend they apply for which will be explained when they get to the academy. My opinion, buy the computer package from the NEX when they offer it...this way it will be exactly what the academy requires and they will not have to lug it during Indoc. Limited food opportunities in the room, no coffee pot/maker allowed until thier 1/C year. They will be even issued a pocket knife that they will have to carry. Everything they wear at the academy will be issued to them, except their gym/running shoes which they wear to the academy for Indoc.

Congratulations on the appointment and welcome to the KP family.

Hello! Does the watch have to be completely black? I heard that it does.

No, nobody will care after indoc/acceptance day. It can be black, silver, white, brown, gold, etc. As long as it isn't pink or something "eccentric". We use the word eccentric to say that you should, where possible, conform to the norm. But, again, eccentricity is subject to individual interpretation.

Those are really nice, actually too nice for me to take on a ship. I've dropped more flashlights, knives, etc into places that either I couldn't go or wouldn't go on ships. I'd hate to lose that thing.

I had a stainless Spyderco that I got from a dive company when I was still with ABS. . . .damn thing fell out of my coverall pocket when I was sitting down watching the crew exercise an anchor windlass on a ship during Annual Surveys. . . darn it. . . I have had a few others since then, but that was the BEST!

Even if you give a fan, Plebe year they may not have fan privileges for a bit. . . .

Rather than gifts, focus on time with family and friends. Maybe money for an outing with HS friends or a larger graduation party. It's probably their last opportunity to be together as a group. Other HS friends will see each other on breaks, but yours will probably miss all that. Get their friends and extended family to pre-write Indoc encouragement letters. Collect them and mail them out one by one, so that you know they addressed properly, and that he/she has something each day during mail call.
