Questions getting accepted for LEAD

Hello, I was wondering if I have a chance and what I could do to get myself a chance at getting accepted into the Air Force academy. Back in high school I was kind of a crappy kid who really didn't do anything, I slacked off and just got by, so I ended with like a 2.9 gpa (Really really low). I was a representative in student council, and did participate in Cross Country, Track, Basketball, and golf if that helps. Afterwords wanting to actually do something with my life, I decided to enlist into the Air Force, and currently work Avionics on the F-22. Looking at the Air Force academy it seems like a great opportunity to improve on myself and really do something bigger myself, and give myself something meaningful in life to really put myself into and work on. I was wondering if I still had a chance at being accepted being such a slacker before, and what I would need to do in order to get accepted (such as programs I would need to join and volunteer opportunities that would make my package look better). Any feedback would be much appreciated, thank you.

I am an enlisted Airman and earned a slot at the prep school this coming year. I was by no means the nominal high school student. My advice to you would be to rock out on the CFA, study and retake your ACT/SAT to get the best scores possible, and while you're enlisted continue to shine and rack up bullets you can use for applying. You have AD experience that kids out of high school don't, and that will be what sets you apart from them. So do what you can with what you have and don't drag your feet on any part of your application process. These forums are a treasure trove of info and advice from people who have gone through exactly what you are right now, the search button is your friend. Best of luck, and if you have any questions feel free to shoot them to me.

Thank you for the reply, do you believe that joining groups such as TAAA or dorm council will help me out at all, or would it be better to focus on just applying and my job

Something else to note is that LEAD applicants don't compete against the civilians for admission. We compete for one of the 80 or so spots that are allotted for Airman each admissions cycle.

Dorm council and ACE councils if your base had one are great leadership organizations to have on your app.. Also don't slack in your job while you're applying, you'll need your Sq/CC's nom so you'll want to be on their good side

I have not heard of ace, but dorm council is something we definitely something we have and something I have been looking to get involved with either way, and if it helps that is all the more reason to do it, thank you for the response.

Might as well go for both right? Although I would rather get accepted into prep, the extra year to help you get into the mindset would be a huge help so I can stay ahead of the game
