So I've heard there there are 3 ways for MOC to make nominations to the USNA:

1. There's a principal nominee who the USNA has to admit into the academy if they meet the requirements

2. There's a principal nominee and all the other nominees are ranked in order of preference

3. All nominees are unranked

How do you find out which one your MOC does? Also of the 10 people they nominate, does at least one 100% get in if they are qualified?

Some MOCs have this information on their website. For others, you will probably find out at some point in the application process.

That is pretty close to it. Technically it's a ranked slate for #2 (although many will say this makes #1 person a principal in many ways). If you read the US Code, the language is different for USNA, a principal does not have to be appointed if 3Q. The majority of the time the principal is honored by the MOC but it is not a 100% guarantee for USNA. You can see if your MOC lists their slate method in their website or contact the coordinator. And a MOC can change year to year on method.

Fewer are using principal nom as in the past. Ours simply nominates 10 and leaves the rest to the academy. He even turns the nomination decision over to his nomination board which was 11 alumni from the 3 academies. It was pretty intense but very fair. The fact that my DS was selected is evident that no politics was in play because we are extremely unconnected lol

For unknown reasons, our same MOC with same staff using a panel changed from Unranked to Principal method. You have no control of it - do not sweat it.

^^^ Very true. Your MOC can change how they do this from year to year. You have no control over which method they use and it makes no difference for how you would answer their questions during an interview. Where a NOM gets issued can be different from where the SA charges it.

You can call your MOC Service Academy Coordinator on your MOC's staff and ask them directly!

I wouldn't go out of my way to find out...you have no control over it and no idea what will be the final outcome. Also, a MOC, who has 2+ vacancies (and decides to use more than one), can use any of the methods for each slate (i.e. competitive for one and principal w/ ranked/unranked alternates as the other).

Ok, thanks for the info

I would suggest that if a candidate has questions regarding their MOC nominations, they should respectfully contact the MOC (or their representative) and ask. After not receiving a nomination from his MOC, my son did this and found that the MOC was not really well informed regarding the nomination process (much to the surprise of his BGO). My son’s efforts gained him a nomination from this MOC and paved the way for nominations for other candidates during his application year as well as the candidates who applied the following years.
