I see on a few threads this subject was discussed but not clear if anyone knows the latest info. What is the parent cost for tuition to the CGA and Naval Academy? There was something about a 2500 - $3000 initial fee. Is this still the fee or was it waived for either academy? And, what travel expenses are paid for induction day and the the swabs and plebes to return home for leaves? Any info appreciated.

USCGA

  1. There is no tuition cost.

  2. There is a $3,000 fee due before June 1 to cover the cost of your laptop computer and initial uniform outlays.

  3. You will be issued an airline ticket for your transportation to the Academy for R-Day, paid for by the Govt. If you are driven to the Academy you can be reimbursed $109 for your travel costs/lodging/meals for one day only.

  4. All transportation costs for travel back to your home and back to the Academy from leave/liberty is your responsibility.

Luigi, from what I read here the computer/uniform fee isn't paid upfront anymore, it is taken out of your monthly pay or something like that. Laptops this year would certainly be nice.

Regarding travel to the academy on I-Day. I was told that you can book your own flight, keep all the receipts and you will be re-imbursed for what it would have cost the academy to get you there.

Re-read my post again, it was specifically for USCGA, the OP asked for answers for both USNA and USCGA.

It is not taken out of your pay at USCGA, it is paid up-front before June 1.

USNA has no up front fee however it has been rolled into the required loan. It used to be the loan was for $6500 not it is well over $9000. If you separate at the end of Plebe Summer you will have a financial responsibility of the close to the entire loan amount.

Hmmm...I Think That's Changed

That may have been the case up until recently, but for the class of 2013 and beyond, the $2500 has been waived, and is not rolled into the required loan.

Hey Kaullman,

Then, is there any type of required loan? If not, then does this mean no costs at all?

Thanks Luigi, I understand your post. I am researching Naval Website and can't find anything as of yet.

Thanks for the info.

Somehow they have to account for the "missing $$$" If you look at the Mids budget booklet, there is no way they can provide goods and services for $6500.00 The amount would have to increase, which it did last year. Class of 2012 also did not have an initial fee - it was "rolled" into the ACE loan. My suspicion is they are no longer even talking about an initial fee - it is now all the ACE Loan.

The information on the ACE loan came in the Permit to report package.

We bought son's airline ticket to I Day. We wanted to be sure we were on the same flight. He turned in receipt and got reimbursed. I bought the tickets early because they were cheap and I didn't want to lose the great fare that we were paying.

Note to Maui1 - Do NOT do this for R-Day travel to USCGA!

The government will not reimburse you if you fail to make your flight arrangements with SATO Travel, even if lower fares are available elsewhere.

I'll Check

Hey Kaullman,

There is still the approx $6500 required loan, which is paid off out of the Mid's pay.

The word that was used when it was announced was "waived" which does not sound like "put off and rolled into the required loan." ProfMom's insistance has shaken my confidence. I'll check with my sources and get back to the forum.

We have already bought out tickets for I-Day. How do we get reimbursed for our sons ticket? I was not planning on the USNA to pay for him getting there in July, I thought that that was just a part of getting our kids there and we had no problem paying for it.
Also, I have gotten conflicting dates for PPW. Will be around August 7-9 or 14 - 16. We would like to make travel plans, any ideas?

Exactly Right

Profmom2 has it right. I was mistaken.

If a Midshipman was to separate they will have a financial responsibility for the remainder of the entire loan amount, minus any payments they have made and any re-issue-able items thay might be able to return.

Sorry for any confusion.

You will be reimbursed for son's ticket...your son will be reimbursed. There will be a form to fill out. Just have your son include his receipt for his flight. The reimbursement showed up in one of the first pay checks.
