My understanding is the second to last NROTC board met last week and the last will meet next week. How may scholarships are likely to be awarded by these last two boards? Does it come down to what programs have openings? When are the last winners this year likely to be notified? Thank you

The second to last board met two weeks ago, but results have not yet been published- they're expected the middle of this week. The last board is meeting this week, and results will be out late next week; MSISR is also being handled by this board. Scholarship selection has absolutely nothing to do with an applicant's school preference- the most qualified applicants remaining are selected and THEN placed into units based on their top 5 list and available slots at those units. The number of students selected varies from board to board, but it's in between about 50 and 100.

DS received email and portal change advising him that he was offered 4-yr NROTC scholarship to VA Tech. We are very proud and happy for him.:)

1mom, Congratulations to your son's achievement!
My DS is still waiting, he is also going to VA Tech. He'll be studying in Mechanical Engineering.
Go Hokies!

Thank you! That is what my DS would like to study as well. I hope your DS will receive his good news, very soon.

1mom, care to share your DS' stats?
Thanks,
Sorry, I believe the stats just don't all add up to how review boards make decisions. The entire resume summary (whole person including the excellent scores and grades) would determine offer or no offer.

Greetings everyone. I have a question re: ROTC scholarship award. My son is still awaiting results of final board. However, he has not been accepted to any of the schools list submitted in his application. He has been accepted to several other schools with ROTC units. Could this be holding up a decision on his application? The site says scholarships are awarded without regard to school acceptance, but 1mom's comment that her son was awarded a scholarship to a specific university makes me wonder should we reach out to someone to update the list of schools being considered.

You should email your NROTC contact immediately and ask if you can switch to the schools your son was accepted to. For us this was an NCC who oversees our NROTC application process. My son did that.

While you should change the list of schools, the folks who award the scholarship do not even consider the list of schools so it cannot be holding anything up. School placement happens after a scholarship is awarded. (Oh, and they don't know if someone has been accepted to a school or not).

DS (and parents!) patiently waiting for the results of the final board and holding out on enrollment deposits for the schools listed on her NROTC application. Do the final results ever come out after the May 1 deposit deadline? I've been checking this board frequently and really appreciate all the advice posted along the way!

I don't understand this. My DS received a NROTC scholarship and when he was notified, both on the portal and later in the mail, the award letter states what school the scholarship is assigned to. Is school placement a separate step to the process after the selection board decides on scholarship award?

Yes, it is a separate step. However, the latter is done immediately after the scholarship winners are identified. Thus, when the scholarship recipients are notified, both have been done and they are informed they have been awarded a scholarship to XYZ school.

Thanks! Did not know this. I figured the cost of the school must have been a decision factor at the board. Also, are scholarship awards always for full tuition/fees?

Yes. It's a separate step in the process. Scholarship is awarded and then another board decides school placement. Finally the winner is informed.

Yep, NROTC is covering DD's Tuition and Fees of $49,685 next year!
