Has anybody here actually heard of someone getting their appointment rescinded for academic reasons? If so, what were the circumstances? Just wondering...

Yes. Failing a senior year class - student got an F. Don't know all the details.

There is a post on the USMA forum about a young man that had his appointment rescinded (I think it was for conduct issues) Typically (though rare), appointments are pulled for conduct or medical reasons.

If you completely tank academically, it could happen. Frankly, there is no reason short of a family calamity for your grades to tank at this point.

Is this a theoretical question or have you found yourself in academic hot water ?

Mostly theoretical. I'm struggling with calculus a little bit and I might finish with a grade in the high 70s, low 80s but don't know if that is disqualifying.

You will be fine with that. An F will raise a flag. A D might also. A C will not be an issue.

I doubt that will impact your appointment. Keep working hard and try to learn something - you will be seeing a lot of calculus the next few years

Whatever your transcript says - does your school post grades or just your %

USNA will not assign a grade other than what your school calls it

Go talk with your teacher, he/she will understand...maybe you can do extra credit or retest? Ask him you need grade C or above:)

I think smoozing with the teacher and asking for a better grade could back-fire (teachers are wise to that tactic). Have you been studying and keeping up with assignments, how have you been doing on other math tests, etc.???? You don't just suddenly start failing a higher level math class as these tend to build upon knowledge you gained in prior classes. A better approach would be to look for some tutoring help and make sure you really understand the subject (study, keep up with assignments, do the homework math problems....etc). Math won't get any easier once you get to USNA.

Go in for extra help. While there mention why you are so concerned. If the teacher is inclined to help you have made your point.
If not, then no harm. You could also mention you have a new lawn mower you have been wanting to try out and if they know anybody that wants their grass cut.

I think many people are missing the point. You don't visit your teacher and try to receive a better grade for the sake of a USNA appointment. The purpose of talking with the teacher should be to put the past behind, figure out how to correct what you don't understand, and set a successful path for the future. That should be enough to make the point that you are serious about learning and that a "lesson" was learned in the whole process. I think most teachers would think "highly" of a student who is dedicated to getting themselves back on track and, if, a grade is in question, they might err on the lenient side. If the "worry" about a USNA appointment is conveyed to the teacher...they probably are going to get the impression that the ONLY reason you want to work "harder" now, is not to jeopardize the appointment. As others have said, a "C" is unlikely to result in an appointment being rescinded.

DD is struggling with Calculus 11 at college. DD has been getting tutor services as well as informing professor of no high school trig classes being offered, which is vital to calc 11. DD visited professor to review test questions/answers and receive additional teaching. Several weeks ago her mentor suggested she contact her regional coordinator from USMA and explain the circumstances in this adverse situation. It is better to inform the appropriate people and explain what you are doing to correct the issue sooner than to wait and let them find out there is a problem. Her RC did return the comment that if she received a D her file could be up for review. DD has all A's in other classes.
