Does anybody know if there's orientation for USMMA like there is for USAFA?
 
I don't know what AFA orientation consists of so I can only tell you that Kings Point offers scheduled day and overnight visits.
 
ok. I actually just got a letter today inviting me to the open house on April 20. My admissions counselor told me that overnight visits give a prospective midshipman a better view of what it's like.
 
neshekfan17, if you can attend just one, maybe try for one of the overnight visits. You'll get a little more one on one time with some Mids.

Congrats btw. You've done a big thing.
 
jamzmom - My son received the April 20 open house invitation. He's already done the day visit and an overnight (he fell in love with the place on the overnight, btw:thumb:) and I'm just wondering whether there's anything new to be gained by the open house. He's thinking he might be able to learn about some of the other majors available - right now he's pretty committed to marine engineering, but he's not completely wedded to it. Ordinarily I'd be fine with yet another visit, but it means a day out of his college physics class which is his weak class. Any thoughts?
 
Thats a tough question that I find no easy answer to. I hope others can chime in here. Deepsea? With there being so few planned events to learn about KP before going in, any opportunity to be on Academy grounds is pretty awesome. There will be much information to be gleaned at open house. That said, missing that day in physics could be ugly. :frown: Keep in mind that as Plebes, they will have classes & such, going over each & every major so that they can get a better understanding of each before making a decision. I wish I could speak from first hand experience on open house but we did not attend. We just took the boy to Indoc, dropped him at the gates & said "Bye now! Have fun!" LOL Wishing you the best on the decision. Sorry, I'm not much help with it.
 
Our daughter did not attend the open house. Her only visit was a day visit in August before her Junior year. Since we live overseas, multiple trips back were simply not an option. I don't think she missed anything important. That said, if we had been able to attend, we probably would have.
 
I really don't think much more is gained by going to the open house if you have already done an overnight visit. If you have other things to do or it is cost/geographically prohibitive I wouldnt' worry about it.
 
I agree. If you have gone to an overnight there is little more to be learned at an open house. Besides, I would never say anything to encourage a prospective student to miss a physics class :) As for the major.... all of the plebes take a course entitled Maritime Professional Studies in their first trimester. This course (referred to as KP100 by the mids ) will expose them to all of the various majors offered so that they can make an informed decision.
 
thanks for the suggestions. I think I will end up doing an overnight visit sometime in April. My admissions counselor recommended an overnight visit over the Open House. I can't wait to see the campus!
 
Even if you can't attend the open house, many of the local parent's associations host a "welcome aboard" picnic or meeting. Keep your eye open for these events. The Chesapeake Alumni (http://www.kpchesapeake.com) with support from the Mid-Atlantic Parents Association (http://www.usmmamidatlanticparents.org) is hosting a big welcome aboard program in Baltimore on 27 June 2009. If you want more information about that pm me. :)

Thanks for all the input! Son will see what Physics lesson is scheduled for 4/20 - if it looks like he needs it for the final, he's going to skip open house (as much as he would like to attend).
