Hello. Quick question. I am 2020 appointee. I just have a quick question regarding watches during BCT and during the academic year. I have this older watch that I am going to wear during BCT.

Is there a high chance that it could break during BCT?

Should I bring a spare or not?

Are watches confiscated during BCT?

During the academic year, would it be thought against of buying a better watch? I'm kind of a nerd when it comes to watches so I was looking one that had like a compass, barometer and thermometer.
Is there a big chance that that one could get broken during the academic year during intense training?

If I were to get a better one, would it be recommended for my parents to bring it to Parents weekend and give it me then?

Thank you

Firstly, this year, all basics are allowed to wear watches during BCT. (Except smart watches)

Most people here have a G-shock, because they are very durable.

I've never broken a watch, but I have scratched up the face pretty bad on a couple. Now I just don't wear a watch when doing physical training.

You can always bring a watch and leave it in your backpack until after basic.

BCT is completely changed this year from what it used to be. The goal is to imitate BMT at Lackland.

You worked last year too, right? That really isn't the goal...I wouldn't say it's "completely" changed.

If the regs specify what colors are conservative, by extension, other colors are not. The military is a uniformed service, uniform being taken quite literally.

I did work BCT last year. Maybe imitate wasn't the appropriate word choice, but my understanding of the brief we received was that the style is moving closer to that of Lackland's.

I agree with LFry. While it has not completely morphed, there are many changes that are occurring this year that make 2020's BCT very different from 2017/2018 (your cadre). Not worse, per say, just different. It should be an interesting summer!

I recent bought a Fitbit Surge. I like it. It's conservative (rubber black band) and it gives me info... It's not water proof though.

Yeah I really like the sage green version. Can I wear that version when I wear my ABU or the dress uniform that you wear to class (not exactly sure what it's called)? Thanks. I would just wear a different watch while in blues

Agreed. It's an altered take on BCT, and I'm interested to see how it works out.

AFI 36-2903:
Watches. Must be conservative and only one can be worn around the wrist while in uniform, PTU, or civilian attire in an official capacity. Conservative examples (not all inclusive) are solid color black, brown, silver or gold. Prohibited examples are diamond covered, neon, bright colors, and bands that exceed 1-inch width.

Per this AFI, I would say that wearing a sage green watch in ABUs is acceptable, as it would be included in the "not all inclusive" clause of the AFI.

You definitely should not wear a sage green watch while in blues.

Can you say what kind of changes are expected in BCT from past couple years?

You will learn upon arrival :)

Sorry if I am spoiling this for the Cadre, but I have it on good authority that one of the changes is genetically engineered dinosaur clones on the A-Course.

Back on topic -- you won't need to trash a good watch during BCT. If it is dark and you are disoriented while your Cadre are yelling at you to get dressed, you can assume it is 0300.
