I am leaving Wednesday for MAX I and I can't help feeling like the packing list in the FTM is just not comprehensive for what we will really need when we get there. Can any POC shed some light on some things you wish you had or anything you think was particularly useful? Most of the things our Det's POC mentioned were in relation to Blues, but since those aren't coming with us anymore, they don't help much.

Also, along with that, does anyone have any recommendations for how to actually pack everything up? I have heard stories of people packing their clothing/towels certain ways to make it easier for the Dorm Maintenance.

Thanks for everything!

I think if you look a few pages back there was a thread on this topic. Might be worth digging a little.

Also headed to Max 1. Roll your shirts and towels like it says in the FTM so you can just put them where they belong in your dorm TD-0. I've heard some people have had hours to prepare their rooms and others have had barely time at all depending on when you arrive at Maxwell. There are gonna be storms in the South for the next week so I think there's a good potential for flight delays so anything you can set up prior to arrival will expedite things. Not sure that it will help but I have all my stuff in gallon bags categorized like the packing list we got.

I was also told to use rubber bands to hold all your rolled stuff together so that it doesn't telescope out on the sides or fall apart during transit - these were just some tips from trainers at my detachment.

Oh, also one more thing - they have on some of the paperwork that we only need a pair or two or PTUs and some toiletries etc in our carry on (I don't know specifics I just know I have the paperwork somewhere). It used to include a set of blues in case your luggage gets lost before they cancelled the parade and they didn't update it to include anything but PTUs. I'm packing a full set of ABUs with boots in my carry on just in case.

My det gave us certain, explicit instructions on what should be included in the carry on bag. This came from HQ/AFROTC themselves:

c. Carry-on Backpack: Cadets must bring a carry-on bag with essential items to carry on board the aircraft in the event their checked duffle bag is misplaced. Carry-on bags must conform to the guidance in the Field Training Manual. Cadets should remember not to carry items that will not be permitted through airport security. Refer to www.tsa.gov for a list of permitted and prohibited items. The following is a list of the minimum items which must be taken in their personnel bag:

(1) Field Training Manual, FT orders, travel voucher and necessary paperwork as directed by detachment cadre

(2) Toiletry kit with all necessary and TSA approved items (male/female)

(3) 2 pairs of undergarments
(4) Full set of physical training (PT) uniform
(5) 2 pairs of white socks
(6) 1 pair of running shoes (only if cadet does not wear them on the plane)

Well I'll ask around for a Wingman789 while I am there lol. Good luck to you, starting to get very real!

If you want a chance to see others from your det, go to the same church services. It should also give us a chance to unwind, if only for a brief period.

Oh yes things are going to get very real in the next 36 hours no doubt, best of luck to you as well! We're all going to kill it down there.

THIS! That's the best chance to talk with the others and trust me....you will not want to stay in Boyd!

Any word on the actual backpack? When blues were involved, the FTM stated the backpack must be black to conform with uniform regulations regarding backpacks and blues. Has there been an update to the FTM that would allow the carry on to be the ABU style backpack?

No. And you really don't want to show up to camp with a backpack other than black. Especially one that stands out so much. Also, you're not allowed to wear anything besides a black (or maybe dark blue) backpack while in blues anyways so there's no way they'd make an exception just for FT cadets if it's not allowed anywhere else.

Just got back from Max 1 so if you have any packing questions continue to post them here and I can get to them for you, a few tips however...

- Laundry Mark EVERYTHING. There wasn't any "In garrison guidance" like the FTM says, they just give you a white bag with a number to throw it all in. These bags have a tendency to burst open during wash cycles and they all get mix matched. Learn from the FT1 guinea pigs and mark it all!

-LOCK YOUR SECURITY DUFFLE VERY VERY TIGHTLY! This sounds self explanatory but you'll be happy when you miss the Form 17 sharking for this. If something can be pulled out of your bag, it's not secure.

-Take advantage of the backpack storage in garrison, it's the only place you can keep unrolled shirts, random toilet trees and other stuff you don't have time to put away. They'll never search the inside of your backpack, just make sure the backpack itself is placed in the right spot in accordance with FTM regs

I though you guys were going to have it easy having your laundry done and all. Good to hear laundry is still a pain! :p
