Hey- I was watching this video of a former navy pilot:

He mentioned something about a non-negotiable contract with your NROTC or OCS program in which you would be guaranteed flightschool in your contract and wouldn't be commissioned otherwise. I heard a lot of other people on forums getting pilot guarantees written in their contracts.

Anybody know anything about that?

NROTC you won't get that, you will have to be on scholarship or earned advanced standing by junior year to continue in the program. You will then do service selection your senior year where you list all items you are qualified for and then the USN selects your future based on your dream sheet, grades, evals, etc. OCS is different and flight contracts can be negotiated. Remember OCS billets are only available based upon the needs of the Navy. So some years there can be very few OCS spots. Other years more. Also those billets could be all subs or SWO depending on the needs of the Navy.

The USMC option of NROTC is slightly different. Once you are on scholarship or earned advanced standing, and have the ASTB scores, you can apply for an aviation guarantee. They are pretty much granted unless there is something glaring in your record or your don't get a positive recommendation from your chain of command.

And by aviation guarantee NavyHoops means your guaranteed a shot at it in flight school. One could always wash out.

One could get medically disqualified or wash out. Heck you get not get the ASTB scores required or pass the flight physical. There are some Naval aviation specific websites just like this one out there. The biggest one is called Air Warriors and has tons of info out there. The only way to 'guarantee' an aviation spot is OCS and then you still have to make it through OCS and earn your wings. 'Needs of the Navy' is a phrase you will learn very early as a Mid.

Yea thanks. Does anyone know any colleges with really successful nrotc programs? I know that's a hard question to answer, my criteria is just success in flight slots.

I've looked into ERAU, Virginia tech,UIUC. Any thoughts?

Yeah, there are definitely no aviation contracts offered in NROTC for Navy options. The guy in this video was an OCS guy and either misspoke or just doesn't know what he's talking about on that topic. For OCS, you apply for a particular designator (job), so it works differently.

Really successful NROTC programs? That's a pretty broad question.....Here's the secret- if you want aviation, you have solid ASTB scores, you earn a strong GPA and aptitude scores in the battalion, and you pass a flight physical, you've got a great shot at aviation. It's not nearly as competitive to get service selected for right now as you might think it is.....Unit has nothing to do with it.

Nah, they all suck!!!
Reminds me of what I tell my wife whenever we go out to eat and she asks how is X? Of courser it's good, what does she expect the waiter to say.
Of course there are successful NROTC aviation programs. They're all over. Agree with NavyNOLA, focus on what YOU can control and the rest will come out fine.
