I am somewhat in a dilemma. About to be an AS 400 with a 5 year degree so I will be going up for rated boards this coming January. I currently have a PCSM of 27 with no flying hours( I know, bad) and a AFOQT pilot score of 65. I plan on retaking the TBAS and getting my PPL this semester before the board, however, my question is if would it be a good idea to also retake the AFOQT? I didn't do great on it (30s in everything except pilot) this causes concern for me because I don't want to do worse on it. Sonce it isn't clear how the TBAS is scored I don't know how much the AFOQT pilot section hurts my score and if a new TBAS can help me at all. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I would say don't retake it...30s are way too close to failing the test and being guided out of ROTC. You may still be able to be picked up for RPA with those scores though. I heard of a 17 and 19 PCSM get picked up for RPA this year and was amazed. If your happy with another job in the AF you should put low interest for everything but pilot and then move onto the nonrated boards.

I've been studying like crazy for the TBAS so I'm hoping that a new TBAS combined with some flight hours will boost it a bit.
Consider that an average PCSM for pilot selects was ~63 in 2015. Your other stats, like FT performance and RSS, as well as PFA & GPA can help offset a below average score, to an extent.
Flight hours are a great idea though, and definitely retake the TBAS. Its not really possible to study for it, just have to be prepared (well rested/fed/energized, clear mind).

There is really no point in doing just the tbas, it's like asking if you should retake a test before you know your true score. If you have your gpa and rss as well as ft scores you can do the math and sort of figure it out. Honestly right now pilot slots are plentiful, but I'd retake the AFOQT. Do you really think you can't do better? If so flying might not be for you. Just my 2cents, 30s and a 65 pilot score has large room for improvement. Study.

I understand where you're coming from, but would it not be wiser to retake the TBAS and get flight hours than retaking the AFOQT. I understand that I don't know by true TBAS score but I've seen people with similar AFOQT scores and no flight hours have higher pcsms so I'm assuming I bombed the tbas. I'm just concerned because I've made it this far I don't want to throw it all away by failing the AFOQT.

Idk how plentiful but the average scores seemed pretty achievable.
People are getting slots with no time and PCSMs lower than 40s I'd say that's reaching pretty far to get people in.
Evers like I said you don't know your tbas score so what's the point unless you think you did that terrible. The AFOQT is measurable and easily improved. You can update flight hours any time up to the board. Best idea if you can afford it is hit tier 2 which should be 6 hours and improve your other lowest scores, which would be your AFOQT.
