I know this has probably been answered before so forgive me...

I got the 4-year NROTC scholarship and am wondering if I'll get benefits like flying Space A, access to commissaries and exchanges, etc. once I join the unit in August. Any answers?

Thanks!!

I know you can access exchanges with a military ID once you get one. Don't know about Space A and Commissaries.

Scholarship freshmen will get a CAC card ID sometime during their freshman year, prior to going on summer training. Yes, a CAC will grant you access to exchanges and commissaries. I believe midshipmen are technically allowed to fly Space A, but you'll be so far down the priority list I wouldn't ever bank on it.

Yes, you can travel space A. You also get great discounts at various resorts and more. Check out http://www.afvclub.com If you have access to a military base close to you, call and ask about space a. I know that a lot of MIDS from USNA travelled space a on various holidays and breaks. We made them aware of as a sponsor family. Also might want to inquire of the some commands as during holidays they may offer "sleigh rides" to closest base to your family. Good luck

USO Lounges at major airports. Love those fine people. Still use them and donate heavily after all the hours I spent stranded with them during active duty years.

The Metro NYC USO - great website with info on discounts and freebies.

AMTRAK military fares.

Military MWR rec sites, such as Shades of Green hotel in the park at Disneyworld, Hale Koa Hotel on Waikiki Beach, vacation cabins/camping all kinds of places. Here's an example:

I have fond memories of the beach cabins at Barking Sands on Kauai, and the cabins in the volcano park on the Big Island.
And all the beachfront BOQs I have stayed at over the years!

At most military bases of any size, there will be a "tickets and tours" office, with discount tickets to amusement parks, movie theatre chains, event venues, inexpensive one-day bus tours to nearby attractions or cities. Some bases also offer rec equipment rental.

TSA pre-check airport security line. Follow directions at TSA.gov on how to enter your Known Traveler number in your airline frequent flier profiles if you are eligible.

Many retailers offer military discounts. Ask. Home Depot and Lowe's do 10%.
